Immigration in
Great Britain
in the 1950s-1960s
ARRIVAL OF BLACK
IMMIGRANTS IN LONDON
In 1945, the first groups of Britain’s post-war
Caribbean immigrants settled in London.
There were an estimated 492 that were
passengers on the Empire Windrush. These
passengers settled in the area of Brixton which
is now a black district in Britain.
FROM THE 1950S INTO THE
1960S
There was a mass migration of workers from all
over the English-speaking Caribbean,
particularly Jamaica, who settled in Britain.
These immigrants were invited to fill labour
requirements:
• London’s hospitals;
• transportation system;
• railway development.
THE RESULTS OF
IMMIGRATION
• The rise of racial violence
• The rise of prejudice
• Rioting in Birmingham, Nottingham
and
west London
• Racial prejudice
RULES OF ENTERING
BRITAIN
• People from the Empire and Commonwealth had rights
to enter
Britain because they carried a British passport.
• Under political pressure, the government legislated
three times in
less than a decade to make immigration for non-white
people
harder and harder.
• Children born to white families in the remnants of
Empire or the
former colonies could enter Britain.
Their black compatriots could not.
