Who invented paper?

The ancient Chinese, who also invented the compass, gunpowder, silk and kites, are credited with inventing paper.

A legend tells of a scholar, Ts’ai – Lun, who watched wasp collecting tiny pieces of bamboo, which it chewed up into a paste, moistening it with its own saliva.

TS’AI - LUN

The wasp rolled the paste into a ball then flew to its nest. There with its legs it worked the ball into a flat sheet which it used to built the wall of a new part of its nest. Ts’ai – Lun copied the wasp’s actions, crushed some bamboo into a paste and made it into a flat sheet witch he dried in the sun. It was the firs piece of paper.

The word ‘paper’ comes from papyrus, a reed – like a plant. It was from stripes of papyrus woven together then trampled flat and dried, that the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans made their writing paper.
