Rose is the emblem of England
In the fifteenth century there was a long
series of wars in England, which were
called the Wars of the Roses. It was fought
between the Dukes of Lancaster and the
Dukes of York over who should be king.
The emblem of Lancaster was the red rose
and the emblem of York was the white
rose. Eventually the Duke of Lancaster
won, so the English emblem is the red
rose.
A thistle is the emblem of Scotland
The Scottish chose the thistle as their national
emblem because it saved their land from foreign
invaders many years ago.
People say that during a surprise night attack by
the invaders the Scottish soldiers were
awakened by the shouts of the invaders as their
bare feet touched the thorns of the thistles in
the field they were crossing.
This, of course, was a good reason to choose
the thistle as a national emblem!
The Legend of the
Shamrock
The story of the shamrock dates back many centuries ago, to the
time of Saint Patrick’s arrival in Ireland. During the 5thcentury a
Welsh man – who would become known as Saint Patrick –
arrived on Irish shores from his native Wales. At this time
Ireland was an island that had yet to be introduced to
Christianity, and was occupied by a Druid population.
One day a group of people came to him and said that they had a
great difficulty believing the Holy Trinity (the Father, Son and
Holy Spirit). It was then that Saint Patrick used the shamrock to
explain the threeinone reference.
Today, the shamrock is celebrated along with Saint Patrick on
March 17 each year. St. Patrick’s Day is a national holiday, and
sees thousands of foreigners arriving in Ireland to join the
celebrations.
