• Jane Austen was born on
December 16, 1775 in a
small village called
Steventon in Hampshire.
She was one of eight
children and her father
was a priest; they lived a
life of poverty.
• Jane’s closest relationship
was with her only sister,
Cassandra. Some of the
characters in her books are
based on Cassandra. They
both died unmarried.
• At the age of 14 she wrote
her first novel called Love
and Friendship and then a
History of England, Prejudice
and Ignorant Historian.
• In her early twenties Jane
Austen wrote the novels that
were later reworked and
published : Sense and
Sensibility, Pride and
Prejudice, Northanger
Abbey. She also began a
novel called The Watson’s
which was never completed.
In 1797 Jane’s father offered
Pride and Prejudice to a book
publisher but the publisher
refused even to read it. In
1805 Jane’s father died and
Cassandra, Jane and their
mother relied on their
brothers.
In 1808, they moved to this cottage in
Chawton. This is now a museum.
• Jane enjoyed dancing( an
activity which features
frequently in her novels) and
she attended balls in many of
the great houses of the
neighborhood.
• She loved the country,
enjoyed long country walks
and had many Hampshire
friends.
• In 1816 Jane’s health started
to fail. She died in
Cassandra’s arms on July 18,
1817; aged only 41. Many of
her books were concerned
around romance, marriage
and friendship. She never
married and declined many
proposals because she was a
very stubborn person.
• Today a lot of her books
are still read and several
films have been made
about her books too.
