What is
Thanksgiving Day?
• Thanksgiving Day is a harvest
festival. Traditionally, it is a
time to give thanks for the
harvest and express gratitude
in general. It is a holiday
celebrated primarily in Canada
and the United States. The
American Thanksgiving began
as a feast of thanksgiving
almost four hundred years ago.
• Thanksgiving Day is on the
fourth Thursday in November .
Journey of Pilgrims
•
In 1620, a religious Puritan
community sailed across the
Atlantic Ocean to settle in the
New World. In the hope of a
better life, they decided to move
out to America. They sailed to a
new continent on board the ship
"Mayflower".
Arrival in Plymouth
• Their first winter in
America was difficult.
They arrived too late to
grow a rich harvest.
Moreover, half the
colony died from
disease. The following
spring the Iroquois
Indians taught them how
to grow corn. Indians
showed them also how
to grow other crops and
how to hunt and fish.
First Thanksgiving
Feast
In the autumn of 1621
they got a beautiful
harvest of corn, barley,
beans and pumpkins. The
colonists had much to be
thankful for, so they
planned a feast. Local
Indian chief and ninety
Indians were present.
The colonists learned
from Indians how to cook
cranberries and dishes of
corn and pumpkins.

Proclamation
George Washington
proclaimed a National Day of
Thanksgiving in 1789. The
idea attracted mixed
reaction. After campaigning
for nearly 80 years, in 1863,
President Lincoln proclaimed
the last Thursday in
November as a national day
of Thanksgiving and prayer.
The day was to be observed
by people by thanking God
and being grateful for his
favour.
.
Family Reunion and
Feasting
Family feast is an
important tradition
during Thanksgiving.
The entire family sits at
the table during dinner
and offer prayer to the
Lord Almighty for his
continuous grace. It is
also a time for relatives
living in different places
to come together and
celebrate.
Thanksgiving Meal
• Foods, eaten at the first
thanksgiving, have
become traditional. The
traditional thanksgiving
meal consists of roast
turkey stuffed with herb-
flavoured bread,
cranberry jelly, mashed
potatoes, pumpkin pie.
Other dishes may vary
as to region: ham, sweet
potatoes, creamed corn.
Thanksgiving Charity
Before Thanksgiving Day the
number of charity events is
growing. Americans are trying
to help people who were not
lucky. They organize charity
dinners, concerts. Even in the
subway stations there are
tables were every American
who wants to help brings
food and donations.
There are many
advertisements in
newspapers about donations
and charity events.
Custom of
Decoration
Thanksgiving is a time to
decorate homes with
wreaths, fresh and dried
flowers. People beautify
their homes, give the
interiors a whole new
look and feel. They light
lamps to brighten the
environment. Tables are
adorned with best china
and antique silver cutlery
to mark the occasion.

Parades
• The Parade is famously known
for its policy of going on under
any circumstance or condition;
be it rain or shine. The most
bittersweet year of the Parade
was 1963, which was held less
than a week after President
Kennedy's assassination, the
country was still in mourning.
But, as they say 'The show
must go on', the parade was
held so as not to disappoint
millions of children and
viewers.
Thanksgiving
Parades
• The traditional Thanksgiving
parade probably started
with President Lincoln
proclaiming it an official day.
The full- dress parade is a
way to display the country's
military strength and
discipline. The main aim of
such parades is to lift the
spirits of the spectators,
provide them with
wholesome entertainment.
In the present day, parades
are accompanied with
musical shows and
celebrities.
