P1“There are three stages of a man’s life: He believes in Santa Claus or St Nickolas, he doesn’t believe in Santa Claus, he is Santa Claus.” Today, in many parts of the world, Saint Nicholas delivers gifts on the eve of his Feast Day, December 6

Презентация

P2 Saint Nicholas' Day, observed on December 6 (in Western Christian countries) and on the 19th of  December (in Eastern Christian countries), is the feast day of Saint Nicholas.

P1 It is celebrated as a Christian festival with particular regard to his reputation as a bringer of gifts, as well as through the attendance of Mass or worship services.

P2In Russia, children wait for St. Nicholas to come and to put a present under their pillows provided that the children were good during the year. Children who behaved badly may expect to find a twig or a piece of coal under their pillows.

P3 In the Netherlands,  and Belgium, St. Nicholas arrived on a steamship from Spain to ride a white horse on his gift-giving rounds." St. Nicholas is celebrated on the 5th, the eve of the day, by sharing candies (thrown in the door), chocolate initial letters, small gifts.

P4Dutch children leave carrots and hay in their shoes for the saint's horse, hoping St. Nicholas will exchange them for small gifts. Simple gift-giving in early Advent helps preserve a Christmas Day focus on the Christ Child.

P3 In the United States, one custom associated with Saint Nicholas Day is children leaving their shoes in the foyer on Saint Nicholas Eve in hope that Saint Nicholas will place some coins on the soles.

P4 One of the less known aspects of Christmastime and St Nickolas Day, is the Krampus. Beware, boys and girls, for if you are naughty you may receive a visit from the Krampus! He has a whip and he isn’t afraid to us.The threat of a visit by the Krampus, who accompanied St Nicholas, was a deterrent to bad behavior.

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas Lyrics

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas
lean your ear this way.
Don’t you tell a single soul
what I’m going to say.

Christmas Eve is coming soon,
now my dear old man.
Whisper what you’ll bring to me,
tell me if you can.

When the clock is striking twelve,
when I’m fast asleep.
Down the chimney broad and black
with your pack you’ll creep.

All the stockings you will find
hanging in a row.
Mine will be the shortest one
you’ll be sure to know.

Suzy wants a pair of skates,
Johnny wants a sled.
Nellie wants a story book,
one she hasn’t read.

As for me, I hardly know,
so I’ll go to rest.
Choose for me, dear Santa Claus,
what you think is best.

P2  One story tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a young woman's father had to offer prospective husbands something of value—a dowry. The larger the dowry, the better the chance that a young woman would find a good husband. Without a dowry, a woman was unlikely to marry. This poor man's daughters, without dowries, were therefore destined to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, on three different occasions, a bag of gold appeared in their home-providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left before the fire to dry. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas. Sometimes the story is told with gold balls instead of bags of gold. That is why three gold balls, sometimes represented as oranges, are one of the symbols for St. Nicholas. And so St. Nicholas is a gift-giver.

P1 Several stories tell of Nicholas and the sea. When he was young, Nicholas sought the holy by making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. There as he walked where Jesus walked, he sought to more deeply experience Jesus' life, passion, and resurrection. Returning by sea, a mighty storm threatened to wreck the ship. Nicholas calmly prayed. The terrified sailors were amazed when the wind and waves suddenly calmed, sparing them all. And so St. Nicholas is the patron of sailors and voyagers.

P3Other stories tell of Nicholas saving his people from famine, sparing the lives of those innocently accused, and much more. He did many kind and generous deeds in secret, expecting nothing in return. Within a century of his death he was celebrated as a saint.

P4 Under the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who ruthlessly persecuted Christians, Bishop Nicholas suffered for his faith, was exiled and imprisoned. The prisons were so full of bishops, priests, and deacons, there was no room for the real criminals—murderers, thieves and robbers. After his release, Nicholas attended the Council of Nicaea in AD 325. He died December 6, AD 343 in Myra and was buried in his cathedral church, where a unique relic, called manna, formed in his grave. This liquid substance, said to have healing powers, fostered the growth of devotion to Nicholas. The anniversary of his death became a day of celebration, St. Nicholas Day, December 6th (December 19 on the Julian Calendar).

Children all over the world are looking forward for this holiday. They write him letters to ask for some presents.

SCENE 1

(4 children are sitting on the chairs and writing letters to S.N. Two voices read some of them. Music is the background )

1.Upon his snow white steed
With wind and lightning speed
St. Nicholas leaves the sky
And comes a-riding by

2.The little hare hops nigh
And lifts his nose up high
The stag with pointing horn
Leaps over bush and thorn

3.And all the creatures dear
Are drawing quickly near
Before St. Nicholas bow
Their little heads so low

4.And we will learn a tune
Of sun and star and moon
And sing our happy lay
Sing on
St. Nicholas Day!

J: Because Santa is not real.

J: Of course, parents do.

M: Is it true?

Mother: No, no my dear daughter, Santa exists. Every year he brings children presents. But Santa likes only good and polite children. If you were good to your parents and friends, cleaned your room, took care of animals, he’ll come to you this year.

J: But you was not a good girl.

Mother: Jane, go to bed, please!

J: Ok, I just  tell you a story about the girl who believed in Santa.

Once upon a time there lived a little girl. Every year she wrote letters to Santa and asked him for presents. That year she asked for  a bike.

Waking up in the morning she did not see it.

The little girl got upset and she has been crying for a long time. Since then she doesn’t  believe in Santa.

I think you`re like that girl Mary. Ha-ha-ha!

The same will happen to you tomorrow!

Ok! good night.

(Jane woke up from bright light. She got up and saw…)

J:What’s going on? Who are you?

S: I am Saint Nickolas.

J: And who is he?

E: I am elf, Santa`s helping hand.

J: I don’t believe it!

S: Why don`t you believe in my existence?

J: Because in fact you don’t exist.

S: But I am here, before you.

J: I am not a little girl, so you can’t trick me.

Mary: Santa?! Santa?! Are you real?

And here is your helper, I think

I’ve heard a lot about you.

E: Yes, we are real, as well as you are, Mary!

We receive your letters every year, and we are very happy to be here today.

M: Santa tell us about yourself.

S: HO, HO. I live in  the North Pole in the country covered with snow.

E: There is a big factory where I and my friends make presents for children from all over the world.

M: But how do you manage to be everywhere during one night?

S: Don’t forget, the Earth is round. Besides Christmas is the magic time. Would you like to see the place I live and work?

Sisters: Sure, we would. With great pleasure .(they leaving)

Elf: Hey,guys. Let’s get to work. Santa is coming. We have much to do.

Oh, this letter is from the Russian children. Let’s see. What do they  ask St Nickolas for?

(Elf is reading the letter from the  Russian children)

Dear Saint Nicholas,

we are Russian children from Berdyansk..

First of all we would like to thank you for the last year’s presents. They were super!

We know you are a great gift-giver, a patron of sailors and voyagers, a protector of children. You can see our behaviour every day. Yes, sometimes we are naughty, noisy and lazy. But mostly we are kind to our classmates, polite to our teachers and are good helping hands for our parents. We like our school life and do the best to get good education and become good citizens of our Motherland. So we beg you to give peace to our people, to protect us.

Besides we ask you to give good health and wealth to our parents and teachers.

And, of course, don’t forget about us. We are looking forward to the presents we deserve.

       Love and best wishes,

     Russian children.

M: Do you believe in Santa now ?

J: Yes, I do . I’m sorry I didn’t believe in your existence.

E: Santa we have to go

S: HO, HO, HO. Yes it’s really time to go.

S: Good bye, and don’t forget me.

E: We look forward to hearing from you the next year.

They sing together : WE WHISH YOU A MARRY CHRISTMAS
