“Sherlock Holmes, the greatest detective that never lived and who will never die”.
Sherlock Holmes is not only ‘the greatest detective of all time’ but also the world’s most famous literary character created by Arthur Conan Doyle.
Many tourists still see the bustling city of London through his eyes and search for his address, 221B Baker Street.
But do you know that when the “Sherlock Holmes” stories were published, street numbers in Baker Street didn’t go as high as 221? In his manuscript Conan Doyle put Holmes’s house in Upper Baker Street, indicating that if he had a house in mind, it would have been there.
Nowadays the Sherlock Holmes Museum is situated in an 1815 townhouse very similar to the 221B described in the stories and is located between 237 and 241 Baker Street. There you can see how the rooms looked like, wax figures and different things connected with Sherlock Holmes. So let’s have a walk through the Sherlock Holmes Museum now.

We know from the stories that Holmes shared most of his professional years with narrator John Watson, who was a physician. And their residence was maintained by their landlady, Mrs Hudson. This woman is described as a very good cook but she is given no physical description or first name in the stories.
Would you like to see these characters with your own eyes?
Let’s step back in time and visit the world’s most famous address.
Baker Street, London
Watson: Good morning, Mrs Hudson.
Hudson: Good morning to you, Doctor Watson. You’re rather early today. With all your comings and goings and his comings and goings it’s a wonder you two have need of my lodgings at all!
Watson: Well, we have to sleep somewhere after all!
Hudson: I don’t know when! Up at all hours! With clients and inspectors dropping in and all sorts of strange chemical experiments and-and-of course that violin playing at any time of the day or night…
Watson: The violin! Ah yes, a very sweet sound today.
Hudson: He must be in a good mood.
Watson: A very good sign. More than likely, he has just arrived at some solution or other…
Hudson: Well, you know him best. I’ll never understand him. But he is a brilliant gentleman.
Watson: I don’t believe I’ve heard him play so since that first day I ever met him.
Hudson: Well, I think no one ever forgets the day they first meet Sherlock Holmes!
Watson: No, indeed.
Hudson: Good day to you, Doctor Watson.
Watson’s voice: How well I remember the day I first met him… Well, in fact… it all began as I was standing just here… holding this very bag. And I was looking for an inexpensive place to live… (tapping on the door)
Holmes: Yes, yes…Come in. (with much energy and at a brisk pace). I’ve found it, I’ve found it! Yes!
Watson: Mr Sherlock Holmes, I’m Doctor Watson.
Holmes: (shaking Watson’s hand) How are you? You’ve been in Afghanistan, I perceive.
Watson: (surprised)How on earth did you know that?
Holmes: Oh, never mind. The question now is about the discovery of mine.
Watson: It’s interesting chemically, no doubt but I’ve come here on a bit of business. I need the place to live in.
Holmes: I’m delighted, delighted! Do you have any peculiar habits?
Watson: Well, I don’t think so…
Holmes: Splendid! Splendid! As for me, it may come as a surprise – I do have perhaps a vice or two… My chemicals, my clients, my moods… and oh yes…my violin. I hope you won’t object to its occasional sweet sounds.
Watson: I suppose it depends on the player. A well-played violin is a treat for the gods – a badly-played one -…
Holmes: Oh, that’s all right! (with a pause and a knowing look) Then I think we may consider the thing settled – if the rooms suit you.
Watson: When shall we see them?
Holmes: Come here at noon tomorrow and we’ll go together and settle everything.
Watson: All right – noon exactly.(shaking his hand)
Holmes: Welcome to 221B Baker Street.
