Mark Twain
Mark Twain is a pseudonym of one of America’s greatest authors and humorists, Samuel Langhorne
Clemens. He wrote for children and adults with equal success.
He was born on November 30, 1835. When he was 4, his family moved to the Mississippi River town of
Hannibal. To the people of Hannibal it was a board highway, providing means of travel, bringing in
goods and visitors and to boys it was excitement. Every boy in Hannibal dreamed of becoming a pilot on
a river steamboat.
After his father’s death, twelveyearold Sam had to leave school and work as an apprentice ( ученик,
подмастерье) to a printer in Hannibal. Setting type for newspaper articles ( статьи в газете) and stories
made him interested in reading and reading led him to writing. Later he travelled throughout East and
Midwest as a journeyman printer.
He also looked for gold in Nevada, with no luck, and for several exciting years he was a Mississippi
riverboat pilot. When he later became a reporter in the Far West, he chose for a pen name Mark Twain.
Young Clemens travelled to Hawaii and Europe as a reporter, and his humorous accounts (отчёты) on
those trips so delighted (понравились) newspapers readers and lecture audiences that he soon was
famous.
Although he had his first story published at seventeen and wrote professionally for over forty years.
Among the books written during that period are his bestknown children’s stories: “The Adventures of
Tom Sawyer”, “The Prince and the Pauper”, and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”.
The words “mark twain” are a riverboating term meaning “two fathoms”(about four meters). Water two
fathoms deep was safe for the riverboats.
