Although Scotland takes up one third of the territory of the British Isles, its population is not very big. It is the most northern part of the island of Great Britain and is not far from the Arctic Circle. The Cheviot Hills marks the boundary between England and Scotland. Apart from this land-link with England, Scotland is surrounded by sea.

In 1765 Robert was sent to school. Let us join young Robert Burns at his lessons. The teacher is a strong young man of eighteen, down from Glasgow University. With him they read, they write, they do counting. All this is fine for Robert, especially the reading and writing. His friends mostly prefer what comes next, the singing lesson. At singing time, the other children relax. But Robert cannot sing.
At harvest time the farmers all helped one another. All the country children worked in the fields all day long. That summer, Robert's work partner was Nelly Kirkpatrick, a blacksmith's daughter. She was his first love. To Nelly he wrote his first poem.
In 1784, at a dancing party, Robert Burns met the "beauty of the village" — Jean Armour. It was "love at first sight". Later she became his wife.
Ты свистни – тебя не заставлю я ждать, Ты свистни — тебя не заставлю я ждать. Пусть будут браниться отец мой и мать, Ты свистни — тебя не заставлю я ждать!
Robert Burns' poems were translated into almost every language. In Russia six of his poems were translated for the first time by Mikhailov in 1856. Shchepkina-Kupernick, Bagritsky and other poets translated Burns' poems, too. But the best translations were made by Marshak. Thanks to Marshak's translations we have come to know and love Robert Burns.

We know that the Scottish national anthem "Auld Lang Syne" composed by Robert Burns is often sung at parties or meetings of friends all over the world. And I think that today we shall honour the memory of the great bard of Scotland by singing his song.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And days of
auld Lang syne!
Auld Lang Syne
Should old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot
And days of auld lang syne?
Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o'kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
And there's a hand, my trusty friend,
And gie's a hand o'thine,
We'll take a cup o'kindness yet,
For auld land syne.
Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll take a cup o'kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.
