His father was a poor farmer, but
his greatest wish was to give his
children the best education he
could afford. He was a clever
man and had a shelf with books
in his poor house.

In 1765 Robert was sent
to school, but his school
days did not last long
because his
teacher soon got another
job and left. The Burns’
father persuaded some
neighbors to hire a
young man as a teacher
for their children. This
young man was John
Murdoch.

In 1786 Burns published his first
book under the title of Poems,
Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. The
book was a great success. He was
invited to Edinburgh. He
conquered the Edinburgh society
by his wit and manners as much as
by poetry. In Edinburgh he was
often advised to write in standard
English on noble themes, but he
refused. He wanted to write poetry
about the people and for the
people.

Robert's mother knew many'
Scottish songs and ballads
and often sang them to her
son in his childhood. His
mother's friend Betty told
Robert many fantastic tales
about devils, fairies and
witches. Burns's mother died
in 1820. She lived long and
enjoyed the fame of her poet
son.

After his father’s death he did not
give up farming and worked hard
to earn his living. In 1791 Burns
got the post of excise officer and
moved to Dumfries. The last years
of his life were very hard. The hard
daily work on the farm, the
constant starvation and privations
finally undermined Burns’s health.
On July 21, 1796, at the age of 37,
Burns died. His body rests in a
Mausoleum in Dumfries. The house
in Alloway, where he was born, has
now been restored.

Robert Burns’s poetry was inspired
by his deep love for his
motherland, for its history and
folklore. His beautiful poem My
Heart’s in the Highlands, full of
vivid colourful descriptions, is a
humn to the beauty of Scotland’s
nature and to its glorious past. He
admires the green valleys,
“mountains high cover’s with
snow, and wild hanging woods”.
He calls his country: “The
birthplace of valour, the country of
worth.”

Just at that time Burns fell in love
with Jean Armour and was going to
marry her, but the girl's father did
not want to have a poor peasant
for his son-in-law. Seeing that
there was no way for a poor
peasant to earn his living in
Scotland, Burns decided to sail for
Jamaica. To get some money for
his passage, he published some of
his poems. Six hundred copies of
"Poems Chiefly in the Scot tish
Dialect" were printed in
Kilmarnock in July 1786.

From thee, ELIZA

Robert Burns died in 1796. After
his death his poems were
translated into almost every
language. In Russia six of his
poems were translated for the
first time by Mikhailov in
1856.Shchepkina-Kupernick,
Bagritsky and other poets
translated Burns’ poems, too.
But the best translations were
made by Marshak. Thanks to
Marshak’s translations we have
come to know and love Robert
Burns. We know that the Scottish
