The following safety guidelines are essential for being to carry out experiments in the Laboratory.
1. Avoid running around, sudden movements, pushing, shoving or bumping into others. Don’t do any practical jokes.
2. Keep the paths and ground clear from clutter (bags or stools etc….) before, during and after the experiment.
3. Stand with your equipment and partners/groups at all times.
4. The equipment is your responsibility. You must ensure that no dangerous situation arises while the experiment is carried out before and afterwards.
5. Wear goggles at all times. Do this before, during and after the actual experiment while you are setting things up.
6. If there is an accident, distance yourself and alert a member of staff. Don’t try to clean up broken glass, you must alert the Teacher and/or the Laboratory Assistant.
7. Most important of all, use your common sense and your scientific knowledge/understanding to avoid any problems. Remember that prevention and preventive actions are preferable to a cure.
8. When using Bunsen burners, don’t lean over the flame and start using Bunsen burners with the safety or yellow flame.
9. Use goggles and turn the gas tap off if there is any incident. If you smell gas don’t touch any switches and report to the Teacher/Laboratory Assistant.
10. Take off all ties and loose items of clothes. Tie back all long hair and put your hair into back of your shirt.
11. In case of any chemical spill wash it off as soon as possible, and read the safety instructions for that experiment. If any chemicals enter your eye, wash it immediately. Using the eye wash equipment. Alert the teacher to any problems.
12. Don’t mix chemicals unless told otherwise by the Teacher/Laboratory Assistant.
13. Don’t eat in the Science Laboratory and don’t put anything into your mouth if it was lying on the Laboratory benches or Laboratory floor.
14. Be careful using sharp objects, like scalpel and tweezers etc.
15. Don’t point them or throw at anybody for any reason.
16. Don’t touch equipment stored in the cupboards and storage units. Don’t touch or play with equipment on bench tops to the sides of the Laboratory unless you are asked to use them by the Teacher/Laboratory Assistant.
17. Don’t take handout, posters or anything hanging or stuck to the walls.
18. Read and pay attention to all danger and hazard sign.
19. Be aware of where the first aid kit, eye wash and fire extinguishers and other safety features are stationed.
20. Do not play, poke or twist gas taps , electric sockets , water pipes and other fittings in the Laboratory.
