На пути к свободе (из Каюты "Дяди Тома" Харриет Бичер-Стоу)

The fragment from the novel I’m going to give a review of is taken from the story "Uncle Tom's Cabin". This novel exposed the terrible fate of American Negroes and became known all over the world. The headline of the story is On the way to freedom. The author of the novel is Harriet Beecher-Stowe. The fragment under discussion is devoted to a problem of racial discrimination.

This novel for the wide audience, because the problem of racial discrimination is popular and many readers are interested in it. This problem understandable for the most people. Author addresses for his reader in a rather informal way. The author is willing to help his readers to better understand the main character of the story, his will to freedom, desire to be independent and free. The author as mentions conditions of a slave labor.

Having read the text we can easily refer it to art stile. This novel is known all over the world. At the present time it occupies an honourable place among the books devoted to the fight against racial discrimination. Specification of the facts,  direct speech, epithets and metaphors are the reliable sings of art stile. Transfer of feelings and emotions of the author are widely widespread.

The title of the story of on the way to freedom make helps to understand sense of the text. The story describes a casual meeting of the young man and the good-natured old man which conduct conversation about further freedom of the young man. The key issue of the fragment of a story is desire to be free and independent.

The author starts by telling the reader about events which occurred in Kentucky: about rainy weather and about the advertisement. Mr. Wilson read in the announcement that the young man was lost. In the advertisement was given a complete description of the young man and stated remuneration for him: George six feet in height, a very light mulatto, brown curly hair, is very intelligent, speaks handsomely, can read and write, has been branded on his right hand with the letter H. I will give four hundred dollars for him alive. The group of people discussed the announcement. The conversation was interrupted by the arrival of a well-dressed gentleman with a coloured servant. Mr. Wilson looked at the newcomer. It seemed to him he had met the man somewhere.  Young man also recognized Mr. Wilson and asked him to talk in private. Mr. Wilson learned in youth George escaped from ads. Mr. Wilson told George that escaped; he made a dangerous thing to do. George said he, in turn that he wants to go to Canada and fight for their independence. Mr. Wilson did not disturb him, only shook it heartily.

The structure of the text is professionally organized and it can be easily reproduced in translation. The title of the story is very catchy and it promises to give useful information for readers. The story includes the introduction where to be spoken about the gone young man, the main part where events are developed and the conclusion. The conclusion at the end is very optimistic.

The text contains some lexical problems for example Geographic names: Canada, Kentucky, Oaklands, Shelby County. The special lexicon indicating racial predisposition: Nigger, mulatto boy, coloured servant.

From the stylistic point of view the text has many epithets and metaphors. Epithets such as carefully dressed man, very light mulatto, well-dressed gentleman, expressive black eyes, the friendly little old man, good-natured face. Metaphors: shook it heartily, to the last breath I breathe, with a proud and independent air, an indifferent air, speaking in a dream. The text as contains many descriptions of a people appearance, for example: The newcomer was a short stout man, carefully dressed, with a round, good-natured face; Ran away my mulatto boy, George. Said George six feet in height, a very light mulatto, brown curly hair, is very intelligent, speaks handsomely, can read and write; The newcomer was very tall, with a dark Spanish complexion, fine expressive black eyes, and curly hair, also black.

From the point of view of grammar the translator simplicity using past simple.

In conclusion I may say that the text is informative, very interesting and useful to the reader. The message of the story is that inform to the reader about the terrible fate of American Negroes and about conditions of a slave labor. author conveys his feelings and emotions, to form the reader the right attitude to this or that describes the object. Each element has a specific function, but all serve the same purpose: to make the most involve the reader in the transmitted atmosphere.  I consider that the story of great value.
