Extraction and chemical properties of ethers

  

  Purpose: to obtain ethers and study their properties.

  Reagents and agents: amyl alcohol, acetic acid, concentrated sulfuric acid, ethanol, 2N.  sodium hydroxide, alcohol lamp, test tubes.

 

Experiment 1. Obtaining diethyl ether

 Procedure: pour 0.5 ml of ethanol and concentrated sulfuric acid into a dry test tube, carefully heat the mixture until a brown solution forms and carefully add another 0.5 ml of ethyl alcohol to the hot mixture.  Write the reaction equations.  How to determine the formation of diethyl ether?

 

 2 - experience.  Loss of regular ethers

 Transfer the ether from experiment 1 to a test tube and add about 2 ml of sodium hydroxide solution.  What is being observed?  Write the reaction equations.

 

Questions for self-control and protection of laboratory work

 1. Nomenclature of conventional gears.  It is necessary to write the formulas for 2-methoxybutane, ethylisopropyl ether, methoxyethane ether.

 2. What are the intermediate stages of the reaction of ethyl ether formation?

 3. Why is the reaction carried out with low heating?  What additional products can be formed in this reaction?

 4. Does the ratio of ethyl alcohol and sulfuric acid affect the composition of the reaction product?

 5. Use of ethyl ether.
