Цели : - учить писать собственные творческие работы - эссе 'за и против';

             - формировать стойкое представление о cтруктуре, содержании и технологий написания данного вида эссе;

            - научить использовать лексико-грамматический материал в письменной речи;

            - развивать умение анализировать, сравнивать, обобщать информацию и делать выводы ;

            -  обогатить речь средствами  логической связи языка;

            - повышать интерес учащихся к изучению английского языка и общую культуру речи.

Оборудование: учебник, дидактический материал,таблица,презентация, рабочая тетрадь к учебнику.

                                                                  ХОД УРОКА

I. Introduction

Teacher :Good morning boys and girls. Glad to see you. How are you today? It's great you are in a good mood.

II. Warm-up

 Teacher : What gadgets do you have?

                 What do you use them for?

                 Which type of media do you use every day?

                 What types of media do you use to do your homework?

                 How will your day be different without gadgets?

III.  Presenting the theme

Teacher : Today we are going to discuss arguments for and against using the Internet as a homework tool. The aim of the lesson is to be ready to write for-and-against essay. Slide 1.

IV. Main body

Teacher : Read the theory box and complete the table, part structure and content. Slide 2.

Teacher : Read the topics (A-C). Which of the topics corresponds to a for-and-against essay? Slide 3.

B. What's the best way to learn vocabulary in English?

C. Credit cards: a curse or a blessing?

Teacher :  Read the essay. What are the arguments for using the Internet as a homework tool? What are the arguments against using the Internet as a homework tool? Find some justifications or examples to the points.

                                                  A for-and-against essay

    In our modern, high-tech society and with 24-hour access to the Internet, it's no surprise that children are using homework-help websites more and more. However, there are arguments for and against using the Internet as a homework tool.
    There is no doubt that using the Internet as a homework tool has its advantages. First of all, it is a quick way to find information. This means that students have more free time for other activities. Secondly, the Internet provides a variety of sources. For example, students can read lots of information and form their own opinions by comparing and contrasting ideas.
     However, there are drawbacks to using the Internet as a homework tool. One drawback is that students don't use their writing skills. For example, they just copy the information which is not always well-written. Another disadvantage is that some websites not only contain poorly written material, but also inaccurate information. As a result, some students may include a lot of facts in their work which are incorrect.
     All in all, I think that the use of the Internet as a homework tool is a welcome and useful development. Unfortunately, though, it is not free from risks and we must bear those risks in mind if we want students to get the most from the Internet.

Teacher :  Open your workbooks at page 68 exercise 4.  Mark the statements 1-8 as A (advantages) or D (disadvantages). Then write two paragraphs giving the advantages and disadvantages of taking exams.

1) Exams give students an idea of how they are doing.
2) They take time away from classroom learning.
3) They are the quickest way to test students.
4) How students feel that day may affect their grade.
5) Students may cheat and get grades they don’t deserve.
6) Tricky exams don’t show how much a student really knows.
7) They encourage students to study.
8) Students can get low marks if exams are too long to finish.

Teacher :  Look at the table. Read the article about using the Internet as a homework tool again. Replace the linking words in bold with appropriate ones from the table. Slide 4.

Topic sentences
We start each main body paragraph with a topic sentence which introduces or summarises the main idea of the paragraph. This helps the reader follow your arguments. The topic sentence is followed by one or more supporting sentences which justify the argument in the topic sentence by giving reasons or examples.

Teacher : Find the topic sentences in the essay. Which are the supporting sentences?

Teacher : Work with your partner. Read the topic sentences and write supporting sentences for each. Use appropriate linkers.

1) O the other hand, TV has got its disadvantages.
2) There are certain disadvantages to using mobile phones.
3) The Internet has certainly got its advantages.
4) There is no doubt that going to university helps your future.

Teacher : Let's complete the information to our table 'For-and-against essay plan' with useful vocabulary and linkers.

Teacher : Read the rubric. Which of the statements (1-5) are arguments for and which are arguments against? Match them to their supporting arguments (a-e). Slide 6.
                                 Your English teacher has asked you to write an essay on the advantages and    disadvantages of e-learning (online lessons).
1. Students can learn at their own pace.
2.  It is more convenient for people who don't have time to go to lessons.
3 . People can save time and money on travel.
4 . It can be lonely studying alone.
5 . E-learning depends too much on technology.
a.  Students don't have to commute to school.
b.  With e-learning there is no chance to meet other people and share ideas with them.
с.  People do not have to be in a certain place at a certain time.
d.  People can choose when and for how long they want to study.
e . Computer problems can make people miss lessons.

Teacher : Do exercise 8 on page 115. Write an essay on the advantages and  disadvantages of e-learning. Use the table and ideas from previous task.
