The theme of the lesson: “YamaloNenetsky Autonomous Region”
The Lesson Objectives:
1. to develop communication skills, master new lexical units;
2. to practice using reading for detail, to practice using reading for specific information;
3. to develop a sense of respect for the other person.
Students’ Level:
The pupils of the 9th Form. The pupils must find the information about region.
Materials Needed:
The cards with the tasks, a map, a pen, a pencil.
Equipment:
1) For teacher: computer; Power Point; the cards with tasks; crossword, projector, text.
2) For students: the cards with tasks, the texts; crosswords

To prepare the text, crossword, the cards with the tasks. Read the information about the region, make the
presentation, make the lesson plan.

YamaloNenetsky Autonomous Region is situated in the very heart of the Russian Arctic zone.
The region is renown in the domestic and world economics as a major fuel and energy
supplier, natural gas resources are accumulated inside the region’s bowels. The region also
supplies its customers with products of deerbreeding, fishing, fur trade. The perspective plans
for Yamal include creation of a major mining industry base here. The area of the Yamalo
Nenetsky Autonomous Region is 750.6 thousands square kilometers. The population is about
500, 000 people, 83% of the population live in towns, and 17% live in villages. We can see here
the representatives of different nations who live in Russian Federation and small ethnic groups of
the Far North.
YamaloNenetsky Region is the native land of some of the smaller peoples of the Far
North, such as Nentsy, Khanty, Mansy, Selkupy. About 14 thousand natives are nomads.
What about the climate it is continental, with long and severe winters. Average
temperatures in January: 2327 degrees below zero, with absolute minimum being minus 59
degrees.
The summer is brief and cool, average temperatures in July: 516 degrees above zero, with
absolute minimum being minus 5 degrees. It’s recommended to use insect repellents in summer
to protect oneself from mosquitoes and gnats.
The territory of the autonomous region consists of Nadymsky, Priuralsky, Purovsky,
Selkupsky,Tazovsky, Shuryshkarsky and Yamalsky district with the following district centers:
Salekhard, Gubkinsky, Labytnangi, Muravlenko, Nadym, Noyabrsk, Novy Urengoi, as well as
eight industrial settlements and 103 villages.
Salekhard is the administrative center, the oldest and the only city above the Polar Circle
with a 418year history.
