What is gastritis?

It is the inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach.

Causes of gastritis

Injury to the lining of the stomach resulting from:

1.       Infections (Helicobacter Pylori).

2.       Regular use of drugs such as aspirin.

3.       Autoimmune diseases that attack the stomach lining.

4.       Stress gastritis.

Diagnosis

Gastritis is suspected when people complain of nausea, pain and discomfort in the upper part of the abdomen. Without further tests treatment with antacids is started. But if the symptoms persist, endoscopic examination is conducted to get a better picture of the interiors of the stomach. A biopsy of the tissue taken from the lining of the stomach may also be done if required.

Treatment

1.       Antacid to neutralize the stomach acid.

2.       Proton pump inhibitors.

3.       Histamine - 2 (H2) blockers.

4.       Antibiotics for infections.

5.       Stop offending drugs such as aspirin.

6.       Surgery is reserved for severe bleeding.
