Shiloh Season by Phyllis Reynold Naylor Script by Becky Endlich Parts Narrator (6), Judd Travers (7), Marty (9), Dad (4) Narrator: Marty and his friend have been watching Judd Travers, Marty’s neighbor. Judd used to own Marty’s dog, Shiloh, and Marty is scared that Judd will get him back somehow, even though Judd was cruel to Shiloh. Marty goes to see Judd, even though he’s scared, to tell Judd what he was doing. Jedd is working on his truck as Marty walks up. Marty: Hi Judd Judd: What are you up to? Marty: Nothin’, just fooling around the creek. Judd: You takin’ good care of my dog? Marty: Shiloh’s doin’ fine. Judd: Thought you might bring him around one of these days. How come he ain’t with you now? Marty: He’s home playin’ with Becky and Dara Lynn. They fixin’ to spoil him. Judd: (Grunts) You don’t take a dog huntin’ he’ll lose his touch. Marty: Huntin’ season hasn’t started yet, Judd. Only thing you can shoot in the West Virginia this time of year is doves. Judd: (Slow, sly grin) That a fact? (spits and wipes his hands on a rag) Narrator: Marty looks around the yard where there are pieces of squirrel. Looks like Judd threw a squirrel to his dogs, even though he shouldn’t have been hunting it. Marty: Listen, Judd, I came to tell you something. Judd: Yeah?Marty: David and me- he was over to my house last night- and we were playing spy. That was us you heard in you yard. Judd: So how come you didn’t answer? Marty: We were scared because you had that gun. Narrator: Judd explodes in anger, accusing the boys of spying for Marty’s father. Judd yells over Marty’s voice. Judd: You or that boy or maybe both of you scratched up my truck, I’m willin to bet! If I catch you over here again, I just may pull that trigger. A man’s got a right to protect what’s his property. Now git! Narrator: Marty goes for home and as he gets home, his dad is getting ready to mow the lawn. Dad: Somethin on your mind? Marty: I wonder if Judd’s drinkin’ on account of me. Dad: (Looks up) Now what put an idea like that into your head? Marty: I was thinkin’ how after I got Shiloh and worked for Judd, I never went back anymore. I think Judd sort of got used to be being around- somebody for him to talk to. Dad: Probably so, but I don’t think a man starts drinkin’ because an eleven year old boy don’t show up. Judd’s got problems that don’t have anything to do with you, Marty. He sure wouldn't bet no prize for gettin’ along with people. Narrator: Marty thinks that making friends with Judd might help Judd quit thinking about Shiloh, but finds out it’s too late. Dad: I told Judd if I ever find him hunting on my land, I’m calling the sheriff. I’m not asking him to stay off my land, I’m telling him. Narrator: Now Marty has a lot more to think about. Read Shiloh Season and find out what happens to Shiloh, Marty and Judd.
