We use the Present Continuous to describe: an action happening now

       annoyance

       plans or arrangements in the near future

Time expressions used with the Present     Continuous: now,  right now, at the moment, today, this week   /    month,     currently, tomorrow, tonight, etc.

We use the Past Continuous to describe:

       an action in progress at a specific time in the past: Ann was painting a portrait at 5 o’clock yesterday.

       an action in progress when another action interrupted it: The children were playing computer games when their parents came home.

Time expressions used with the Past Continuous: when, as, all day, yesterday at 5 o’clock, etc.
