Edvard Munch, a Norwegian painter, graphic and theater artist, theorist, is one of the first representatives of expressionism.

Edward was born on December 12, 1863 in the Norwegian city of Löthen to Christian Munch and Laura Katrina Bjölstad. The boy had an older sister Johanna Sofia and two younger ones - Igner and Laura, as well as a brother Andreas. Нe was the second child in the family. At 5 years old he lost his mother and sister. They got tuberculosis and died. This tragedy had greatly influenced the boy. Munch was a sickly child, in winter he has been cutting classes. So, he began to draw to do with himself.

Although the Munch family lived in poverty, influential creative personalities joined their family. So, the artist Jacob Munch was a distant relative. Edward's grandfather is remembered by the world as a talented preacher, and Christian's brother, Peter Andreas, is an outstanding historian.

Illness in one way or another haunted the Munch family. Soon after Sophie passed away, another of Edward's sister, Laura, began to behave strangely. She often worried, threw tantrums, on other days she sat quietly and did not speak to anyone. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Edvard Munch was not married and had no children.
