Appearance
The color of the skin is plain. It changes with age: newborns are dark blue, after a year they turn gray and bluish-gray; individuals older than 3-5 years are pure white (hence the name).
The largest males reach 6 m in length and 2 tons of mass; females are smaller. The head of a beluga whale is small, “big-chested”, without a beak. The vertebrae on the neck are not fused together, so beluga whales, unlike most whales, can turn their heads.
Lifestyle and nutrition.
The basis of beluga food is fish, mainly schooling (capelin, cod, polar cod, herring, Far Eastern navaga, flounder, whitefish and salmon species); to a lesser extent, crustaceans and cephalopods. Beluga whales do not grab prey, especially bottom organisms, but absorb it.
Beluga whales make regular seasonal migrations.
Reproduction.
Breeding time of beluga whales in different areas from spring to autumn; mating and childbirth occur off the coast. Males often arrange tournament fights for females. Pregnancy lasts about 14 months; females bring offspring once every 2-3 years. Usually one cub is born 140-160 cm long; very rarely - two. Childbirth occurs at river mouths where water is warmer. The next mating occurs within one to two weeks after birth. Milk feeding lasts 12-24 months.
Interesting facts
In winter, the whale preys on cod, flounder, Pollock sculpture, making a very deep dive to 300-1000 m and staying under water for up to 25 minutes.
For the variety of their sound whalers in the 19th century they were called white whales “sea canary”, and the Russians had the expression “beluga roar” - a characteristic roar of a male during a rut.
Belugas have a well-developed vision, both under water and above its surface. Probably, the eyesight is of a white color, because its retina contains rods and cones - photoreceptor cells.
Belugas are very attractive in appearance, attract a viewer, are well trained and often become "stars" of aquariums and dolphinariums. Like all dolphins, they are sociable, cheerful and socially highly organized animals. Their ability to communicate in a friendly manner is often used to treat sick children during dolphin therapy sessions.
Save the dying Sea mammals!
Whales, dolphins, seals Save from hunters!
In the world for profit,
They don’t bite
And they defend poorly.
Whales are faithful to their habits,
They do not attack first,
And although they are huge,
But in the world they are very modest.
I want to say today:
Let people will take care of those who swim in the sea –
Today, this is the main thing.
