Kami: Spirits of Nature, Ancestors and Phenomena
Shintoism is the indigenous, oldest religion of Japan, which has no single founder or scripture.• At the center of faith is the veneration of Kami - spiritual entities that can be deities, spirits of nature (mountains, rivers, trees, wind), spirits of ancestors or outstanding personalities.• The main principle is the desire for harmony with nature and purity, both physical and spiritual. Evil is seen as a filth that can be cleaned.• Among the most important Kami -Amaterasu-Omikami, the goddess of the Sun and the ancestor of the imperial family, as well as the creation deities of Izanagi and Izanami.
Jinja and Rituals:Dialogue with the Divine
Jinja (Shinto temples) are sacred places where Kami live. They are designated by the recognizable gates of tories, which symbolize the boundary between the worldly and spiritual worlds.• Before entering the main hall (hayden), visitors perform a ritual washing of hands and mouth (temizuya) for purification.• Basic practices include Kami offerings (coins, sake, rice), prayers (norito) and purification rituals (harai) performed by priests.• Matsuri are bright Shinto festivals held throughout the year. They celebrate the change of seasons, harvest, important events and strengthen the community's bond with Kami.
Shintoism Today:The Basis Of Japanese Culture
Shintoism is deeply rooted in everyday life and cultureJapan. His principles influenced aesthetics, ethics, attitude to nature and society.• Many Japanese profess syncretism, combining Shinto and Buddhist practices, for example, births and weddings are celebrated according to Shinto rites, and funerals are celebrated according to Buddhists.• Despite the lack of the status of the state religion, Shintoism continues to play a significant role in the formation of national identity and the preservation of traditions.• Jinja temples remain important places for prayers, celebrations and quiet contemplation, attracting millions of visitors every year.
