The nature of the Orel region is rich and diverse. There are forest-steppes, massifs of broad-leaved and mixed forests, fields, meadows and steppes. This explains the diversity of the animal and plant world: 72 species of mammals, 258 species of birds, 12 species of amphibians, 7 species of reptiles, 38 species of fish. Unfortunately, many of these animals are listed in the Red Book and are under state protection.

Bison

Bison is a large artiodactyl animal. He is listed in the Red Book, because he is threatened with complete disappearance. Now the animal is not found in the wild on the territory of the region, but lives only in the national park "Orеl Polesie", but even there its number is very small.

Muskrat

The muskrat is a small mammal, a relict species: this animal has lived in our region since the time of the mammoths. Its tail is covered with horny scales, and its body is covered with thick velvety fur. Muskrat lives in rivers. The reason for the extinction of these animals was the pollution of rivers, drainage, deforestation, grazing.

Black Stork

The black stork is a large bird. The body length reaches 1 m; the wingspan of adults reaches 2 m. The color of females and males does not differ. Black and metallic luster prevails; sometimes it is complemented by bronze, purple or green shades. The beak is red, the lower part of the wings and the belly are white. The black stork is currently a very rare breeding species on the territory of the Orel region. Its nesting sites are Maloarkhangelsky and Khotynetsky districts, as well as the Orеl Polesie National Park. Recently, in the Shablykinsky district of the Orеl region, ornithologists discovered a residential nest of a black stork, in which there were two practically feathered chicks.
