II. Introduction of new topic:
Have you ever noticed that on a hot summer day the pool is
cooler than the hot cement? OR maybe that the ocean is cooler than the
hot sand? Why?.. (Students answer)
Today we will talk about Specific Heat Capacity
Specific Heat Capacity can be thought of as a measure of how
much heat energy is needed to warm the substance up.
You will possibly have noticed that it is easier to warm up a
saucepan full of oil than it is to warm up one full of water.
Write down the definition:
Specific Heat:
gram of a substance 1 degree Celsius.
The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1
˖
Let’s read the definition together.
Equation:
˖
Q = c m ΔT
ΔT = Tfinal – Tinitial
Q = the heat absorbed or released
c = the specific heat of the substance
m = the mass of the sample in grams
ΔT = change in temperature
The next table shows how much energy it takes to heat up some
different substances.
III. Review.
Learning Check
1. A substance with a large specific heat
a) heats up quickly b) heats up slowly
2. When ocean water cools, the surrounding air
a) cools b) warms c) stays the same
3. Sand in the desert is hot in the day, and cool
at night. Sand must have a
a) high specific heat b) low specific heat
Problem solves. (explain)
1) How much energy would be needed to heat 450 grams of copper
metal from a temperature of 25.0ºC to a temperature of 75.0ºC?

(The specific heat of copper at 25.0ºC is 0.385 J/g ºC.)

Explanation:
The change in temperature (ΔT) is:
75ºC 25ºC = 50ºC
Given mass, two temperatures, and a specific heat capacity, you have
enough values to plug into the specific heat equation
q = m x C x ΔT .
and plugging in your values you get
q = (450 g) x (0.385 J/g ºC) x (50.0ºC)= 8700 J
Problem solves
2.) Copper metal has a specific heat (Cp) of 0.385 J/g⁰C. Calculate the
amount of heat (J) required to raise the temperature of 22.8 g of copper
from 20.0⁰C to 875⁰C.
