CULTURAL NOTES ABOUT BRITAIN
The British are practical and realistic, careful about almost everything. The British are said to be a
polite and goodmannered people. Polite words or phrases such as “please’, “thank you”, Excuse me’ are
used very often in Britain. People are angry if you jump the queue. It is polite to wait your turn in the
queue. Queueing is as British as fish and chips. Queueing is a national habit. At bus stops and cinemas, in
shops, banks and post offices and in lots of other places you’ll have to join the queue and wait for your
turn. People in Britain will expect you to be polite in the way that is normal to them.

(Текст, который разбирался на предыдущем уроке)
A SHORT HISTORY OF THE FORK
The word fork comes from the Latin 'furca' for "pitch fork." The twoprong twig was the first
fork. One of the earliest dinner forks is attributed to Constantinople in 400 A.D By the seventh century,
small forks were used at Middle Eastern courts; such fork came to Italy in the eleventh century.
Thereafter the fork disappeared from the table for nearly 300 years. Eating with a fork once considered
scandalous. In
While forks were a regular feature on the tables of nobles in Italy since the 11th Century, and
used in France in the 14th Century, it was introduced in England only in 1611 by Thomas Coryat. In
England the fork was slow to gain. In 1608, Thomas Coryate took the "grand tour" of Europe, and in
Italy he saw a fork. He liked it. He brought some forks and showed them to his friends. Coryate's friends
mocked at him. And a fork appeared on the English tables 50 years later.
Today, depending on need, a set of flatware may contain five forks: dinner fork, fish fork,
luncheon fork, salad or dessert fork.
In Russia the first fork appeared in the 17th century.

12 Развитие логического мышления, памяти, познавательного интереса при чтении незнакомого
текста на английском языке «В английском колледже»
Учитель: Read the text and find out why the students in Brighton College have decided to study
about etiquette. What are modern student taught college?
(Прочитайте текст и найдите информацию, почему в Брайтоне проводят уроки по этикету.
Чему учат современных английских учеников?)
1) Чтение текста про себя.
School gets strict on modern etiquette
Brighton College, a private school in southern England, has decided to introduce compulsory etiquette
classes for its 690 pupils, bringing them up to speed with oldschool manners in the modern world.
Fed up with young men and women not knowing how to reply to a formal invitation, looking uncertain
about what to do with their napkin at dinner, or simply being unable to iron a shirt, the headmaster has
decided to take action.
There are lots of things people used to know that are being neglected in the modern way of living, like
being able to sew a shirt button, iron a shirt or tie, how to use the correct cutlery and how to write a letter.
Many people don't necessarily know how to behave in a formal setting.
A modern schoolboy or girl should know how to dance the waltz, how to tie a real bowtie and six
things to do with an egg. Now all 13yearolds joining the school will have a year of weekly classes in how to behave properly in
polite society from how to give their shoes a proper shine to the correct form of addressing people at
dinner parties.
Both are taught not to cut bread but to break it, and that men should talk to the person to their left during
the first course of a dinner party and turn to the right during the main course.
These are important things that all our students should know.
2) Ученики отвечают на проблемный вопрос.
13.Итог урока.
Have you known any new infornation?
Are there any differencies in Russian and British ways of politeness?
