Good evening!
Today we are happy to greet you, music and poetry lovers, in our salon.
Goethe said: «A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul. »
TR1:

People think that poetry is dead. It was great in its time, but its time is past. Who reads poetry now? No music, no video clips - absolutely nothing interesting about poetry whatsoever.
So what killed poetry? Undoubtedly one of the culprits was pop, although this was just one aspect of an entertainment industry whose influence went so deep that it managed to ensure that no one any longer would have an ear for poetry.
In its day poetry was kept alive by a certain sensibility that many people in the middle and upper classes had. These were people who could travel out into the countryside and just sit and listen to the birds singing and the wind gently whistling through the leaves.
Alex:(slide3)
Things have changed. People grow up with a constant supply of mass-produced music and chat and TV images and noise - a wall of sound keeping almost everything else out. Any place seems empty and time seems to pass in a deathly way without it. When no one any longer was able to take pleasure in silence there ceased to be an audience for poetry and the art form we had known for some 3,000 years died.
Since it is dead why don't we just leave it to rot in its grave? But some of us believe that we should try to keep alive the memory. We can still read the old poems there on the yellowing paper even though the audience for whom they were intended has largely disappeared.
As an effort in this direction we offer a little introductory tour dedicated to English poetry.
TR1:

It was the 1920s in New Orleans, and sad beautiful music filled the streets and cafes. The singers were black , and most of them were poor. They sang about their lives, their loves, and the tough world they lived in. Their music – jazz, ragtime and blues soon travelled to Europe and all over the world.

The days of pop stars and the huge pop concerts were here. The fans rushed to hear their favourite music, screamed, fainted, and came back for more. Pop music was now the world of young people everywhere, moving fast , always changing.

It was 1969 in Woodstock, near New York. A great pop festival attracted nearly half a million young music fans. Most of them were hippies, who shocked the world with their beards, long hair, old jeans, and their calls for Peace and Love. Rock music was loud and fast, but there was a gentler sound too. The great folk singers, like Joan Baez and Bob Dylan, touched millions of people with their protest songs. They sang about the war in Vietnam and about violence in the world.
TR1:

Punk-is a rock music genre that developed between 1974 and 1976. Punk bands typically use short or fast-paced songs, with hard-edged melodies and singing styles, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics. The term "punk" was first used in relation to rock music by some American critics in the early 1970s. By late 1976, bands such as the Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Damned in London were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement. The following year saw punk rock spreading around the world, and it became a major cultural phenomenon in the United Kingdom.
Yana:(slide 12) In 1980s, British pop music still has a worldwide audience. Groups from Britain like the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Clash, the Police, and ex - Beatle Paul McCartney with his new group Wings, are the most popular singers in the USA today.
TR2: 80-е.
