Письмо от Стивена Лонга Митчелла
Dear Ms. Galdina
As someone who has been writing for a living for over twenty years and reading for pleasure for twice that long I would like to say that I think there are both positives and negatives about e-books - but when I factor them all in I am very much in favor of them.
In a world that continues to get smaller and smaller the technology of e-books allows people in far off places to have the same access to written material that others in more urban places in the world have very easy access to.
I am writing this to you and your students from Los Angeles, California, USA. Fifteen miles from Hollywood. Literally halfway around the world. And with the press of a button the words I am typing can be in your hand and their ears in less than a second.
The same can be said about e-books. Whatever we want to know in the world today can be in our hands with the stroke of a key.
I can press a button and be reading Anna Karenina in a second. And just as quickly you can press a button and be reading Twilight.
I'll leave it to you and your class to decide who would be more entertained and who would be more bored.
But the amazing part is we can do it all instantly.
I love regular paper books as well and for some writers still buy their books in that form. But I love the convenience of carry one device on which I can read anything that was ever written since the beginning of time.
I'd love to know what your students think about the difference between the formats and would be happy to participate in any way with your class in the future.
Best regards,
Steven Long Mitchell
(an American novelist, TV writer, best known for his work on the series “The Pretender”, “Star Wars” and “24”)
