Ход мероприятия:

I:  Hello, everybody! We are glad to see here our students and teachers. We all are greatly interested in the traditions of all English-speaking countries.

II: Today we will speak about one of the major holidays in the USA —Thanksgiving Day. Only one country in the world celebrates it — the USA. Do you know why?

I:  Of course, I do. But I’m sure it will be interesting for everybody to learn about the historical background of this holiday.

II:  Let’s ask our students to tell us about it.

S1: Thanksgiving started about 4 hundred years ago in the fall of 1621 (Map).

About 100 people sailed to America from Plymouth, England in September 1620. They were called the Pilgrims. The name of their ship was Mayflower.

S2: What for did they leave their native country? They went their in the hope of a    better life. They were looking for religious freedom. So the Pilgrims landed at the place which they called Plymouth Rock. Now it is in the state of Massachusetts. It was in December 1620.

S3: The Pilgrims’ first winter in the New World was extremely difficult, even terrible. They arrived too late to grow any crops. Without fresh food and because of illnesses many of the Pilgrims died during their first winter in a new place.

S4:  The next spring their neighbours – Indians taught them how to survive in America. The Indians taught them how to plant and grow corns, potatoes, beans, pumpkin, squash; how to fish and hunt. The crops did well and in the autumn of the next year the Pilgrims had a great harvest. They were thankful to God, the friendly Indians and to each other for that and decided to celebrate it.

S5:  They prepared a three-day feast, they cooked many dishes of corn, beans, pumpkin and of turkey. By the way they had never seen this unusual big bird — turkey before. That’s why it became a traditional dish for Thanksgiving dinner and its symbol. The Pilgrims invited their Indian friends who brought their food to the feast too.

I:  What did the Pilgrims do those long 3 days of celebration except eating?

II:  They really ate a lot during these days. Do you know what helped them to eat much? They danced a lot too.

I:  Let’s dance all together as the Pilgrims did. Please, stand up.

(А Chicken dance)

II:  Let us applaud ourselves! We were great!

I:  The necessary thing for celebrating this day is expressing gratitude to all people and praying. Now our students will show us how it was done.

S6:  Thank you

For all my hands can hold—

Apples red and melons gold,

Yellow corn both ripe and sweet

Pears and beans so good to eat.

S7:  Thank you

For all my eyes can see

Lovely sunlight, field and tree

White clouds in the sea deep shy

Soaring birds and butterflies.

S8:  Thank you

For all my ears can hear

Birds’ songs echoing far and near

Songs of little streams, big seas,

Frogs and chickens, ducks and bees.

S9:  Thank you, God, Thank you, God!

For tasty things to eat.

Thank you also for this day

When we with friendly hearts meet!

I:  There was one more amusing and funny event during the days of celebration Thanksgiving. People organized different kinds of competitions.

II:  As far as I know this tradition is held these days too. Different communities, schools, towns compete in different kinds of sports.

I:  Let us organize a kind of races just now. We will have a race between a team of Pilgrims and a team of Indians. We need 10 students — 2 from each class.

II: We have got 2 teams. Let’s count their members (the audience counts in chorus):

One little Indian, two little Indians,

Three little Indians, more!

Four little Indians, five little Indians,

Five little Indians, no more!

One little Pilgrim, two little Pilgrims,

Three little Pilgrims, more!

Four little Pilgrims, five little Pilgrims,

Five little Pilgrims, no more!

I: Our teams will have 4 races:

·        blowing the cup race

·        tossing a pancake race

·        a three-legged race

·        a spoon with an egg race

You may applaud and support our participants. Ready….steady….go!

(Races)

I:  Let’s applaud our teams. The races were really exciting. Let’s thank our     sportsmen for the pleasure we got. I hope you all agree that the tradition of thanksgiving was wonderful, and only because of that it is alive till now and absolutely all the families of the country gather together to see each other, to tell good kind words to each other.

II:  On this day Parades are held in different towns and cities. They unite people. They make all the people of the country one family. These parades make dull and gloomy autumn days bright and happy. No wonder people like them and eagerly take part in them.

I:  We are sure that such a wonderful day as Thanksgiving can become a good tradition in our gymnasia because  there are a lot of people whom we should say “Thank you”.

II:  And first of all we should express our gratitude to our teachers. We are really very thankful to you, dear teachers for your kindness, for your patience, for interesting lessons, for the knowledge you give us, for the time you spend with us and for us.

I:  And this piece of music, gymnastic exercises, poems and a dance is our present for all our dear teachers.

(A piece of music,

Gymnastic exercises,

A dance)

S 10:  The Pilgrims came across the sea

And never thought of you and me

And yet it’s very strange the way

We think of them Thanksgiving Day.

S 11:  We tell their story, old and true

Of how they sailed across the blue,

And found a new land to be free

And built their homes quite near the sea.

S 12:  Every child knows well the tale

Of how they bravely turned the sail,

And journed many day and night

To worship God as they thought right.

S 13:  The people think that they were sad,

And brave; I’m sure that they were glad —

They made Thanksgiving Day — that’s fun,

We thank the Pilgrims, every one!

II:   On this day we can’t forget about our parents, grandmas and grandpas, and other relatives. Our best wishes to them.

I:  Thank you, dears, for your love and generosity. The dance and the poem is our present to them.

(A dance)

S 14: Thanksgiving Colours

Orange is a pumpkin.

Yellow is the corn.

Brown is the turkey

With stuffing to adorn.

Red are the cranberries.

Green are the beans.

Five delicious colours—

In a feast of my dreams.

S 15: Apple pie, pumpkin pie, turkey on the dish!

We can see, we can eat everything we wish.

Grandmas here, grandpas here,

Cousins bright and gay,

Aunts and uncles share with us

This Thanksgiving Day.

II:  Our life can’t be full, interesting and eventful without our friends, classmates and schoolmates. Let us thank each other for what we have, for all good things in our life. The following song is a present to everybody from everybody.

                             Song

If you are happy and you know it

Join us!

If you are happy and you know it

Join us!

If you are happy and you know it,

And you really want to show it

If you are happy and you know it

Join us!

If you are happy and you know it

Clap your hands!

If you are happy and you know it

Clap your hands!

If you are happy and you know it,

And you really want to show it

If you are happy and you know it

Clap your hands!

If you are happy and you know it

Stamp your feet!

If you are happy and you know it

Stamp your feet!

If you are happy and you know it,

And you really want to show it

If you are happy and you know it

Stamp your feet!

If you are happy and you know it

Say “We are!”

If you are happy and you know it

Say “We are!”

If you are happy and you know it,

And you really want to show it

If you are happy and you know it

Say “We are!”

I:  To finish our today’s gathering we want you to pronounce the words which are usually said at the end of any Thanksgiving dinner or any other Thanksgiving celebration.

On the screen: Today I thank God/ my life

For all the people around, behind and before me:

The ones who gave me life

And shaped my life;

Those who bring me joy today

And hope for tomorrow.

And I thank God/ my life too

For the people I’ve not yet met.
