Past Simple

Use:
1. Actions completed in the past
2. Past habits
3. Past actions which happened one immediately after the other
4. Completed past actions not connected to the present with an implied time reference.
5. Actions which happened at a specific time in the past.
Past Continuous
1. At 9 o’clock yesterday morning, we were driving to the airport.
2. He was reading a book when the doorbell rang.
3. I was tidying up while John was surfing the net.
4. The wind was blowing and dark clouds were gathering in the sky.
Use:
1. For an action which was in progress at a stated time in the past.
2. For a past action which was in progress when another action interrupted it.
3. For two or more actions which were happening at the same time in the past.
4. To give background information in a story.
Past Perfect
1. Tom had done all his homework before his sisters returned from school.
2. He had won first prize, so he was enthusiastic.
Use:
1. For an action which happened before another past action.
2. For an action which finished in the past and whose result was visible in the past.
Past Perfect Continuous
1. Helen had been waiting for 5 days before he called her.
2. He had been working very hard for hours, so he was very tired.
Use:
1. To put emphasis on the duration of an action which started and finished in the past before another past action. (for and since)
2. For an action which lasted for some time in the past and whose result was visible in the past.
Past tenses

2. He ……………. ( wait) for 6 days before he ………... (get) the letter.
3. I ………….… (look) for the key while John …………..(pack) his handbag .
