Ուղղակի և անուղղակի խոսք
Ուղղակի խոսքն օգտագործվում է արտահայտելու խոսողի ճիշտ բառերը (խոսքը բառացի): Անուղղակի խոսքն օգտագործվում է վերարտադրելու ուրիշի խոսքի բովանդակությունը:
Անուղղակի խոսքի ժամանակ օգտագործվում է that շաղկապը, որը հաճախ չի ասվում:
Aram said, “I play chess well.”
He said (that) he played chess well.
Ուղղակի խոսքից անուղղակի խոսքի անցնելիս անհրաժեշտ է կիրառել հետևյալ կանոննները.
Ø եթե ուղղակի խոսքին նախորդող to say բային հաջորդում է խնդիր (ում է ուղղված խոսքը), անուղղակի խոսքում to say բայի փոխարեն գործածվում է to tell բայը.
Jane said to him, “I’m really hungry.”
Jane told him she was really hungry.
Ø Անձնական և ստացական դերանունները փոխվում են համապատասխանաբար ըստ դեմքի.
She said to me, “I know your name.”
She tome me she knew my name.
Ø Գործողության տեղ և ժամանակ ցույց տվող մի շարք մակբայներ, որոշ դերանուններ և պարագայական կապակցություններ փոխվում են հետևյալ կերպ

Ø Երբ գլխավոր նախադասության բայ-ստորոգյալը դրված է անցյալ ժամանակով, ապա երկրորդական նախադասության բայի ժամանակաձևը փոխվում է հետևյալ կերպ.

Անիրական պայման արտահայտող նախադասություններում ժամանակաձևը չի փոխվում.
He said, ''If I had a balcony I would grow plants in pots.''
He said that if he had a balcony he would grow plants in pots
Անցյալ ժամանակաձևերը չեն փոխվում ժամանակի պարագա երկրորդական նախադասություններում,
իսկ գլխավոր նախադասության բայ-ստորոգյալը կարող է փոխվել կամ մնալ անփոփոխ.
He said, “When we were living (lived) in Paris we often saw Paul.”
He said when they were living (lived) in Paris they often saw (had often seen) Paul.”
Հարցական նախադասություններ
Ø Երբ ուղիղ խոսքը ընդհանուր կամ անջատական հարցական նախադասություն է, ան ուղղակի դարձնելիս օգտագորխվում են if կամ whether.
She asked, “Do you know Ann?’
She asked if (whether) I knew Ann.
Ø Հատուկ հարցական նախադասությունների դեպքում հատուկ հարցական բառը մնում է նույնը, և շաղկապ չի ավելանում.
She asked, “Where is the station?”
She asked where the station was.
Հրաման, խնդրանք, խորհուրդ
Հրամանը, խնդրանքը և խորհուրդը անուղղակի խոսքւմ արտահայտվում են բայ+լրացում+ինֆինիտիվ կառույցով, որտեղ գործածվում են՝ tell, order, ask, advise և այլ բառեր: Կառույցի ժխտական ձևը կառուցվում էինֆինիտիվից առաջ not ավելացնելով:
"Could you please be quiet," she said.
She asked me to be quiet.
She said: "Ann, could you open the window, please?"
She asked Ann to open the window.
The doctor said to me, "Stop smoking!"
The doctor told me to stop smoking.
She always says, "Please don't forget me."
She always asks me not to forget her.
