Do you ever wish you could fly? (You can't fly.)

I wish it didn’t rain so much in England. (It rains a lot.)

It's crowded here. I wish there weren’t so many people. (There are a lot of people.)

In subordinate sentences after wish you can use were instead of was. I wish my room were larger. (or 'I wish my room was larger.')

I wish I were taller. (or ‘I wish I was taller.’)

I wish ... would is used when we want something„to happen or somebody to do something. The

speaker is complaining about the present situation.

I wish somebody would answer that telephone. It’s been ringing for five minutes. I wish the neighbours would turn the music down.

Task 1. Choose the correct alternative.

1.       I really wish I can/could/would be able to speak another language.

starving!

8.       Mrs Palmer wished her grandchildren live/lived/had lived near her. Then she could visit them more

often.
