Учебная встреча по курсу страноведения для 11-х классов в рамках недели английского языка.

Форма проведения: интеллектуальная игра «Счастливый случай».

Задачи: повторить содержание темы «Соединенное королевство Великобритании и Северной Ирландии»; повторить достопримечательности Лондона, проверить знания учащихся о знаменитых писателях и поэтах страны изучаемого языка, тренировать учащихся в переводе английских пословиц; учить пользоваться дополнительной литературой по английскому языку.

Подготовка: собрать дополнительный материал по Великобритании, повторить английские пословицы.

Оборудование: Плакат, на фоне звёзд которого написано название игры «Happy Chance”, плакаты с названием каждого гейма: «Go on», «Tricks from the Box», «I’m walking round London», «Our Old Friends», «Treasure Hunt», три списка вопросов по курсу страноведения, карточки с английскими пословицами, карточки с описанием писателей, а также с описанием географического места, секундомер, золотые и серебряные медали.

 

Сценарий игры:

Teacher (Т): Good afternoon, everybody! Today we are going to play "A Lucky Chance Game". Three teams will take part in it and there'll be five games.

Game 1 is called "Go on!" The task is to answer the questions at high speed. If you don’t know or don't remember the answer, another team can give its variant but will get only half  a point for the right answer.

Team captains, come here to determine the order your team will be asking. Ош referee(s) is/are ... . She/he (they) will count the number of the right answers. Every right answer gives one point to your team.

T: Game II is called "Tricks from the box". I've got a box full of cards with English proverbs. Team captains, come here to choose one card. The task is to give Russian equivalents of the English proverbs. If you give a word-for-word translation, you'll get one point. If you give a Russian equivalent of an English proverb, you'll get two points. Besides, there is a "Lucky chance" card. A "Lucky chance" card will give your team an extra 5 points added to your score.

 

Капитан каждой команды достает карточку из коробки и, посоветовавшись с командой, читает и переводит пословицу и т.д., пока все карточки не закончатся. Побеждает команда, успевшая перевести больше пословиц и/или подучившая дополнительно пять очков за карточку, на которой написано "A Lucky Chance Card".

T: Game III is called "I’m walking round London". Now you are going to listen to five short passages about the sights of London. Try to guess what sights are described in them.

 

 

 

Text 1

It is one of the most remarkable examples of the early English Gothic style. It's impressive in appearance and size. It is used for coronations, funerals, and memorial services of great political leaders and national figures of England. Here is Poet’s Comer situated. (Westminster Abbey)

 

Text 2

When the flag is on the top of it, it means that the Queen is at home. Every day at 11.30 a.m. you can see the beautiful ceremony of the changing the Guard. In front of it is the Queen Victoria Memorial. (Buckingham Palace)

 

Text3

It took 35 years to build after the Great Fire of 1666. The architectural style of it is English Baroque. It is one of the largest in the world, the second in size after a similar building in Rome. It stands in the City of London. The Golden Jubilee Service for Elizabeth II (2002) took place there. (St. Paul’s Cathedral)

 

Text 4

There are a lot of old and new beautiful parks in and around London. This park is the largest of them. It is one of the most popular places of Londoners on hot summer days. This park is famous for its Speaker’s corner. (Hyde Park)

 

Text 5

It is a long grey building with towers. It is situated on the banks of the river Thames. There is a large clock on one of the towers. It is called Big Ben. (the Houses of Parliament)

 

Text 6

William the Conqueror built this building in the eleventh century. Twelve ravens live in it. The British believe that London will be rich till the ravens live there. (the Tower of London) 

 

Teacher: Game IV is called «Our Old Friends». Great Britain is very rich in remarkable writers and poets. They include Daniel Defoe, Jonathan Swift, Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, George Gordon Byron, Alan Alexander Milne, Rudyard Kipling, Robert Bums, Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and many others. From their early childhood children all over the world read about the adventures of Alice in Wonderland and Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends, listen to the stories about the boy Mowgli who was brought up by the animals in the jungle. A lot of works created by British writers have been filmed.

Listen to the task. Now each team will choose 4 short pieces of information about British writers. The task is to say what writers are mentioned in these passages.

Passages:

1)       This is the 3rd best-selling author in the world (after Shakespeare and the Bible). The books of this author have been translated into 103 foreign languages. Many of the novels and short stories have been filmed. The writer was bom in 1890, was educated at home, and began writing at the end of the First World War. This writer is known all over the world as the Queen of Crime. (Agatha Christie)

2)       This writer is the greatest satirist in the history of English literature. He was bom in Dublin in 1667. He got his education at Trinity College. After leaving college, he worked as a private secretary. His great desire was to serve Ireland. His most famous work is “Gulliver’s Travels”, which became one of the best books for children. (Jonathan Swift)

3)       This writer was born in the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. After finishing school, he became a student of the medical faculty in the University of Edinburgh. In 1887, he published his first detective story. “A Study in Scarlet”. Its main characters, two friends, became the most popular characters of a great number of his stories. In 1891, he gave up his medical work and devoted all his time to his literary activity. (Arthur Conan Doyle)

4)       His birthday on January 25th is Scotland’s national holiday. This writer began to write poetry at the age of 16. In 1786, he published his first book of poetry. The success was complete. He became well-known and popular. He lived only 38 years but when we speak of Scotland, the name of Scotland’s Bard is always there, as the everlasting symbol of that country. (Robert Burns)

5)       This great man was born on the 23d of April and died on the same date in 1616. His birthplace was Stratford-upon-Avon..His father was a glove-maker, hs mother was from a wealthy respectable family He wrote 37 plays, 154 sonnets, many books and poems. In 1601 his great play “Hamlet” was written. (William Shakespeare)

6)       This English writer mostly wrote for children. He was born in England in 1832. He was considered a well-educated man as he studied in Oxford. Though he was a mathematician by job, he became world-known as a writer. His book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” made him famous. It is still a favourite children’s book both in Great Britain and many other countries of the world. (Lewis Carol)

 

 

 

Teacher: The last game is called "Treasure Hunt." Your task is to find a place on the map of the UK using the description of this place. If you do it quickly, you'll have the right to open our 'treasure chest'. You may come up to the map of the UK and try to find the place you need. Each team will get a card on which you can read the 1st piece of information about 'your place'. I should say the task is difficult if you have only one piece of information. However, you can Ъuу' die second piece if you pay 2 'points' for it If that doesn't help you, you may Ъuу' the last part of the information for 4 'points'. (The team discusses the information and decides whether 'to buy' or 'not to buy' the other piece of information.)

 

Task for the 1st team:

(part 2) It is the National Park and one of the most popular tourist attraction.

(part 3) It is one of the wettest parts of England as there is a lot of water and Lake Windermere located  here is a good place for boating.. (Lake District)

 

Task for the 2d team:

(part 1).It is a mysterious place situated in Northern Ireland.

(part 2) It is .known as the 8th Natural Wonder of the World.

(part 3) It consists of 40000 basalt columns. (the Giant’s Causeway)

 

Task fot the 3d team

(part 1) This tourist attraction is located in Wales.

(part 2) You can enjoy mountains, beaches, moorlands, lakes, castles and even steam railways here.

(part 3) The second highest mountain in Britain is situated in this place. (Snowdonia)

 

Teacher: As we see team № ... has been the first to complete the task. The captain gets the right to open the box and to see what 'treasure' we have in it. (There are "gold" and "silver" medals for the participants of our competition). Now I will ask our judges to announce the results of the competition. The winners will get "gold" medals. The members of the other team will get "silver" medals. I am very thankful for your help. I hope you are pleased with the game and you have learnt something new and have become more confident in your knowledge.
