Ход мероприятия.
Many people think that ‘history’ and ‘the past’ are the same thing.
= But they aren’t. The past is what actually happened. The past can never change.
History is how we think and write about the past. History is always changing.
= So events that occurred in 1621 (the past) will never change.
But how we think about these events (history) has already changed a lot!
= Thus, there was an event in 1620. The ship “Mayflower” reached the shores of the
North American continent, and brought about 100 people exhausted with a long
voyage, hungry and frozen, but ready to start new life.
(Pilgrims history)
Granny, why do we celebrate Thanksgiving?.
= Oh, darling, this holiday has a very long and contradictory history. One of its traces
leads to the Pilgrims who came to America in 1620.
Oh, Granny, and who were the Pilgrims?
The people we know as the Pilgrims have become so surrounded with legends
that we tend to forget that they were real people. Against great odds, they
courageously made the famous 1620 voyage and founded the first New England
colony. But they still were ordinary English men and women, not super heroes.
= So they came from England, didn’t they?
You’re quite right. They came to America for religious freedom on the one hand,
and to escape economic problems on the other hand. Many of the Pilgrims were the
members of a Puritan sect known as Separatists. 3
= I am sure they missed their country at first.
Why not. Certainly. And they brought with them familiar customs, among which
were an autumn secular harvest celebration and a puritan religious Thanksgiving holy
day. Besides, they observed the weekly Sabbath on Sunday and the day of
Humiliation and Fasting.
= Poor things! When they came to America, they didn’t have any homes and it was
the beginning of winter.
Yes, my honey. The first winter was a terrible time. There was much sickness and
starvation. Native Indians the Wampanoag taught the Pilgrims how to plant, to fish,
to hunt and how to survive in America.
(ВЕДУЩИЕ)
So on November 11, 1620 the Mayflower anchors in Provincetown Harbour with
the passengers having decided to settle in New England
= On December 20, 1620 a party of explorers from the ship encounter Wampanoag on
Cape Cod for the first time. Although shots are exchanged, no one is hurt in this “first
meeting”.
On December 20, 1620 the colonists choose an abandoned Wampanoag village
called Patuxet for their first new site. The former inhabitants had died or been
scattered by a European disease four years before.
= On March 22, 1621 Samoset, a Monhegan Native, brings Tisquantum (Squanto) to
New Plymouth and announces the imminent arrival of the Wampanoag leader
Massasoit. Governor Carver and Massasoit conclude a treaty of peace. Squanto stays
with the colonists.
(The Wampanoag)
The Wampanoag are one of many Nations of people all over North America who
were here before any Europeans arrived, and have survived until today. Many people
use the word “Indian” to describe us, but we would prefer to be called Native
people. 4
= Our name, Wampanoag, means People of the First Light. In the 1600s we had up to
forty thousand people in the sixtyseven villages of the Wampanoag Nation. We
covered a large territory and have been living on this part of Turtle Island for over
fifteen thousand years. Among the Wampanoag as well as other Native people, the
Earth is often called as Turtle Island.
Today we have about four to five thousand Wampanoag in New England. There are
three primary groups, Mashpee, Aquinnah, and Manomet, with several others getting
together again as well. We also have recently found some of our relations in the
Carribian islands.
= We, as the People, still continue our way of life through our oral traditions (the
telling of our family and Nation’s history), ceremonies, the Wampanoag language, song
and dance, social gatherings, hunting and fishing.
At the time of the pilgrims we were seasonal people living in the forest and valleys
during winter. During summer, spring and fall we moved to the rivers, ponds, and
oceans to plant crops, fish and gather foods from the forest.
= Today the Earth has changed so much because many people are not respecting
Mother Earth. We as the Wampanoag cannot live like our forefathers. We adapt but still
continue to live in the way of the People of the First Light.
(ВЕДУЩИЕ)
= The American custom of giving thanks did not begin with the arrival of European
colonists. Spirituality was and is a deeply sacred and personal part of Wampanoaf life.
From ancient times to the present times, the Native people of North America have held
celebrations to give thanks for the harvest and other good fortune.
As you see, the harvest celebration of autumn in 1621 was quite plainly neither a fast
day nor a thanksgiving day in the eyes of the Pilgrims. Rather it was a secular
celebration which included games, recreations, three days of feasting with Massasoit
and 90 Wampanoag men.
= In 1789 George Washington proclaimed November 26 as Thanksgiving Day in honor
of the adoption of the United States Constitution. 5
The Pilgrims, Wampanoag and Thanksgiving were first linked together in 1841 when
Alexander Young rediscovered Edward’s Winslow account of the 1621 harvest
celebrations.
= Then there had been some more changes and in 1941 President Franklin D.
Roosevelt proclaimed the fourth Thursday of November as Thanksgiving Day.
Thanksgiving Day is associated with certain symbols and foods. Turkey is one part
of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, since it is believed that the Pilgrims and
Native Americans had turkey at their feast.
= Cranberries are also part of Thanksgiving dinner, probably because the Pilgrims had
cranberries, which they found in bogs around Plymouth. The “craneberry” as it was
called, was used for dye, as well as for food.
The horn of plenty or the cornucopia, is a familiar Thanksgiving symbol. It is a
symbol of earth’s bounty, and reminds us how much of our food comes from the
earth.
= Indian corn is used as a decoration. The Native Americans taught the Pilgrims how to
plant corn, which the Pilgrims used to survive their first winter. To keep hostile tribes
from knowing how many Pilgrims had died, the Pilgrims planted corn over graves.
The Pilgrims are sure to use pumpkins and different herbs for their Thanksgiving
dinner but the historians can't find traces of pop corn and pumpkin pies in that feast.
= This is the day for Family reunion, thanks and presents and now it’s high time to
have a little celebration and offer all of us some presents.
