‘This year my family went on a hiking tour in the Andes mountains in South America. We walked on a highway that had been built about 600 years ago by the ancient Incas to make travelling between their mountain cities easier. While you’re walking up and down the mountains, the climate keeps changing, so it’s like entering a different world each time – it was fantastic! There were so many kinds of plants, animals and birds – we even saw condors high up in the sky. Every night we camped at a different place. The best part of the tour is that it was environmentally friendly – we only ate fresh, local food and we weren’t allowed to leave any rubbish behind or to do anything to pollute the environment. And I almost forgot – the archaeological sites were great, too. I’d like to go on a similar holiday again, but to a different place.’

‘My dad had the chance to go to Tanzania on a volunteer holiday, and he took all of us with him. It was great! In a way, it wasn’t really a holiday for my dad because he worked hard in the animal rescue centre at Serengeti National Park, but he enjoyed every minute of it. We loved Tanzania – I hadn’t known that the highest mountain (Mount Kilimanjaro) and the largest lake (Lake Victoria) in Africa are located there. There were plenty of mountains to climb, and of course we went on a safari. We saw lots of animals. One weekend, we took a trip to the nearby island of Chumbe, where we swam with dolphins and turtles – they’re protected there and are quite friendly. I hope we go on a volunteer holiday again next year!’

‘I was one of ten lucky winners of a competition in an international teen magazine and went to an adventure camp in Australia for two weeks. It was fantastic! I met kids from other countries who’d also won, and we had a great time. We went snorkelling and diving along the Great Barrier Reef – a biologist told us all about the reef and how it was starting to die because of the rising sea temperatures caused by global warming. It was very sad. After that, we spent a week working on a ranch in the outback country, helping take care of the animals and doing other small jobs. We also had the chance to see some of the famous Australian wildlife like kangaroos and koalas. I really enjoyed myself and hope I can visit Australia again.’

‘Last year there was a huge fire in the forest not too far from our town. A group of local people started the Save the Mountain club, where volunteers work together to try to make the forest green again and to keep it safe. We stayed at the club’s camp in the centre of the forest. Every day we got up at sunrise, ate, and set off to do our day’s work. Most of our time was spent planting trees, which hopefully will grow quickly. In the evenings, we sat around our campfire and talked or sang. Sometimes biologists and ecologists came and told us lots of interesting things about the forest and the animals that lived there. It was a great experience and I plan to do it again next year.’
