The History of the Word "Hobby"
6. The word owes its origin to a small horse called 'hobby'. A hobby-horse was a wooden toy which children rode like a real horse, hobby. From this came the expression "to ride one's hobby-horse", meaning "to follow your favorite pastime", and in turn, hobby in the modern sense means activity for enjoyment.
7. There are hobbies for every personality, lifestyle and budget. Popular hobbies often involve collecting items like coins, stamps, baseball cards, working with your hands like sewing, embroidery or performing an outdoor activity like clowning, hiking or bird watching.
8. Creating something useful or making things for decoration can be both practical and fun. Acting, play writing, poetry, playing an instrument, collecting music CDs, or writing song lyrics are all good ways to spend a quality time. Radio controlled model cars, airplanes, helicopters or boats have opened up a wide spread, interesting activity.
9. Board and card games like chess, checkers are a great way to stimulate your mind and meet new people. Just remember that the most important thing is that you have fun with whatever hobby you choose!

LEONARDO DA VINCI – A GREAT ARTIST AND SCIENTIST
The person I admire the most is Leonardo da Vinci. He was born on 15th April 1452 in the town of Vinci, Italy. His full name was Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, which means Leonardo, son of Piero from Vinci. He was not only one of the greatest painters of all time, but he was also an architect, sculptor, engineer, inventor, mathematician and musician.
Leonardo da Vinci was a very intelligent and imaginative man. He created many different
designs. Some of them were for a bicycle, a helicopter, a parachute and even an aeroplane! He also liked to study everything in nature. You can find some of his notebooks in museums today. In them you can see drawings of plants and animals as well as detailed sketches of the human body!
Leonardo da Vinci paid a lot of attention to detail and his paintings are very realistic. The Mona Lisa, for example, is one of his best known works of art. It is a painting of a woman whose face often makes people wonder if she is smiling or not.
I admire Leonardo da Vinci for his amazing works of art and his great inventions. His artwork will last forever and people around the world admire it even today.

Amusement Park Survival Guide
How to have amusement park fun and avoid injury (избежать травмы).
Accidents at amusement parks sometimes happen. It can make parents worry when they plan a day of family fun. Read experts' tips that can help to make your park visit safe and fun.
6. Children under 13 suffer half of all ride injuries. Parents make a huge mistake when they let children go on rides that aren't right for their size.
7. There are different ride structures, and you should examine a ride yourself to decide how safe it is for your child. Just because there is a sign saying that a kid can go on a ride doesn't mean that the ride is safe for them.
8. Bring comfortable clothing and shoes. Wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet during rides. Remember that you are spending the day around industrial machinery. This means you should put your hair up, and avoid wearing scarves, drawstrings, or long necklaces, for example. Dress in light-colored clothing to avoid overheating.
9. Be especially careful on water rides. You need to teach children not to stop in the middle of a slide, which may cause serious neck injuries. As a general rule, be conservative when you are unsure if a water ride is safe.
Task 2. Read the following text and mark the statements T (true) or F (false).
