Ghost Hunting

For psychical researchers, people who deal with anything that seems to be outside the normal world of human senses, there is no doubt that ghosts exist. There are recordings of sounds, there are eyewitness accounts, and there are even photographs. The question for them is – what are they?

Peter Underwood, the president of the Ghost Club, is one of Britain’s greatest ghost hunters. He has spent fifty years to try to come up with some answers.

One theory he takes seriously is that, in times of great stress or serious emotional pressure, a sort of print may be left behind on the atmosphere, like an image on a film.

Under certain conditions, this print can be seen again. Certain people may have more ability to see it than others. Ghosts often walk along ways they would have when they were alive, and if there are walls or closed doors that have been put up since their time, they walk straight through them.

But many other theories exist, and many people do believe that ghosts are actually the spirits of the dead people, who for some reason cannot live the earthly world. Perhaps they are forced to stay as some kind of punishment, or perhaps they are simply afraid to live.

Ninety per cent of ghost sightings that are reported have completely natural explanations. They can be patterns of light reflected in strange ways, the result of people’s imagination, or a simple mistake. Of course, too, there are many cases of fraud. People still invent ghosts for money, publicity, or even just because they are lonely and want attention.

For this reason the first thing a psychical investigator investigates is the person or people reporting the story.
