The captain invited me to sail to Africa with him. Of course I agreed with pleasure.
Our voyage to Africa was lucky. But when we came back to England, the captain

The weather was fine and the sea was calm. But not far from the shores of Africa
we met a ship with a black flag. It was a pirate ship, and the pirates attacked us.
Our sailors fought bravely, but the pirates were stronger. Some of our men were
killed, and the others were taken prisoner. When the pirate ship came to the port,
the captain took me to his house and made me his slave.

Better Late Than Never
One Wednesday morning Finy Fox and Shiny Fox, the two little brothers,
were walking to school. They walked slowly for 10 minutes, then Shiny
said, "Be quick or we shall be late for school! It is half past eight!" But Finy
said, "I don't want to go to school today. We are already late. We can have
so much fun in the forest. Our mother thinks we are at school, so we can
play in the forest. We can go home when we hear the boys coming home
from school." Shiny said this was a good idea.
So the foxes ran to the river. What a good time they had! They laughed a
lot, they swam in the river, they danced with little bears and sang songs with
the birds. They got on well with all the different animals who lived in the
forest. The foxes didn't think at all about their classroom, their desks, pens,
pencils, their books and their lessons. Wednesday was their longest school
day — they had Maths, English, Handicraft, Art and Nature Study on their
timetable. All the subjects were very important. But the foxes didn't want to
write on the blackboard or in their exercisebooks. They didn't want to
study, to learn to count and to read. They didn't want to work. They wanted
to play outdoors.

rain.” “No, I am sure it will not,” said Patridge and left the hotel.
But very soon it began to rain. “How did the receptionist know it?” he
thought. “I must return and ask him. It will help me to write my almanac”.

it. It began raining heavily and he was too tired to go to another hotel. So he
agreed to spend the night with another traveler. A porter showed both of
them to their room, took in their things and wished them good night. Soon the
two men went to sleep.
Suddenly Mr Green heard some noise. He opened is eyes but didn’t see
anything. It was quite dark. “What’s the matter?” Mr Green asked in
surprise. The second traveler answered, “I am very sorry, I had to wake you
up. I am not well. Please, open the window quickly.”
Mr Green got out of bed and began looking for matches, but he could not find
them in the dark, so he tried to find the window. It took him some time and at
last he thought he had found it. But he could not open it. As the voice of the
traveler became weaker and weaker, Mr Green took a chair and broke the
window with it. Then the man said that he was much better. The two of them

Pamela: Well, last year I did this job in the holiday camp. I'd been looking
for any work and I said I wanted something useful for kids, because I want to
become a primary school teacher when I finish school. So I got down in a house
which was formally an office. Besides, it was quite near the road, so I could take a
bus to go home twice a week.
I really liked the work, which was all my joy, and I got on very well with
most of the little children. The best part of my work was to take round their drinks
with cookies.
The only trouble was a sevenyear old boy, who didn't want to have his
hands washed before going to dinner, I wonder, if his mother could get on well
with him. I survived, anyway. Another idea about my job is that my collegues treated me just like the
same, like an equal. It made me proud of my own work and try to do it as well as
them. It was a really useful experience, and I learnt a lot. I'm going back there next
year, because I'm organizing a quize for them. I'm looking forward to it.

0 Almost everyone says that computers are wonderful and that they are 00
changing our own lives for the better by making everything faster and
1 more reliable, but I'm not so much sure that this is the case.
2 The other day I was standing in a large department store until
3 waiting to pay for a couple of films for my camera when the assistant
4 announced that the computer which controlled the bill it had stopped
5 working. I didn't think this was a big problem and I set myself off to
6 find another counter, but of course, all the machines are one part of
7 the same system. So there we were: a shop full of customers, money
8 at the ready, waiting to make our purchases, but it was quite clear that
9 none out of the assistants knew what to do. They weren't allowed to
10 take our money and give to customers a written receipt, because the
11 sales wouldn't then have been recorded on the computer system.
12 In the end, like with many other people, I left my shopping on the
13 counter and walked out. Don't you think so that's ridiculous? It would
14 never have happened before computers, and that, for me, is all the
15 problem; we are beginning to depend on these machines for so
16 completely that we simply can't manage without them any more.

THE CIRCLES IN THE CORN
By Mike Sinclair
Circles like this have appeared all over the West of England every summer
for the past ten years. Farmers have woken up in the morning to find strange,
almost perfect circles in the middle of their cornfields. Now all sorts of people are
trying to explain how the circles are formed. So far no one has given, a satisfactory
answer.
The circles vary from two metres to about forty metres in diameter.
Experts from all over the world have come to England to examine the most recent circles. The Americans, the Canadians and the Japanese are becoming extremely
interested because circles have appeared in their countries as well.
There have been many explanations for the circles. Some people have
suggested that the circles are made by tractors (but there are never any marks of
tractor wheels). Others think that they might be the result of helicopters hovering
over the cornfields, or even that they could be the marks from alien spaceships.
One witness reported that she heard buzzing sounds which 'sounded like
helicopters' and saw 'strange little lights' which looked like lots of candles'. There
has even been a suggestion that the marks come from lovesick hedgehogs running
round in circles! On the other hand they may simply be a hoax.
However, scientists are sure that there must be a sensible explanation for
the mysterious circles. The most recent theory is that they are the result of sudden
whirlwinds caused by a fall in temperature on summer nights. So, as Dr Meaden of
the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation says: "The wind may be the answer
but it could be another fifty years before we know exactly how. This means we
will probably have another fifty years of spaceship theories to look forward to".
But whatever the scientists say, summer just wouldn't be the same without the
circles in the cornfields.
