My favourite methods of lexical work on the lessons of English language
1. Good afternoon, dear colleagues!
(I) Could you tell what is common between words and darkness?
|
|
|
Possible answers:
- when we don’t know the words and don’t understand the speech we can compare this situation with being in the darkness.
When people don’t understand words, they get into language darkness and become sad.
When I cannot see words curling like rings of smoke round me I am in darkness - I am nothing. – Когда я не могу видеть слов, закручивающихся словно кольца дыма вокруг меня, я в темноте, я – ничто.

2. Today we’ll share our ideas How to Turn Passive Vocabulary into Active Vocabulary.
What Is Active and Passive Vocabulary?
Passive vocabulary includes the words you can recognize and understand, but can’t come up with on your own when writing and speaking.
Active vocabulary includes all words that you can think of and use right away when you’re in the process of communicating.
When learning a language, both your active and passive vocabularies change all the time. You use words, forget words, try out new words and previously learned words. So, words may move freely between your active and passive vocabularies as time goes on, but your passive vocabulary will always be much larger.
Even in the case of your mother tongue, your passive vocabulary is going to be much larger than your active one. However, no matter how many words you’ve learned to understand, the moment comes when you need to use them. And that’s where your active vocabulary reigns.
Language learners hoping to speak Eloquently, in a convincing and expressive manner, would do better to focus on convErting their rich but passive lexicon into active vocabulary.
The thing is, most polyglots don’t divide lexicons into active and passive — they talk about expanding vocabulary in general it. There’s tons of research and discussion about how to expand your vocabulary in a foreign language.
How to do that?
Let’s find out right now.

3. let me introduce my favourite methods of training lexis which cha be used in different parts of the lesson.
1. (II) Tic-tac-boom. For my lessons I used to use my telephone application “TicTacBoom”.
I’d like to pay attention that the rules of the original game differ from the rules which I created for lessons.
So, my Rules for “TicTacBoom”on the lesson.
1. Students may stay on their sits or stand in a circle. They play in a clockwise direction, for example.
2. The teacher clicks on the "START" button and starts the bomb. After this we can hear TicTac sound.
3. The game continues until the bomb explodes. It can explode at any time – may be in 1 minute, may be in 30 seconds. Nobody knows.
4. During TicTac sound students should say particular words on a particular topic. A word cannot be called twice in the same round. If a bomb explodes at someone's turn, that player is considered the loser of this round.
Besides, if a word doesn't fit or has already been called and other players notice it, the bomb stops and the player who named the wrong word is also considered the loser of this round.
5. The loser should do some tasks. For example, if we remember or train the lexis about travelling, the student should ask the loser 3 questions about travelling or 3 questions which contain previously said word.
Let’s play.
On the slide you can see the picture.
You should come up with words which can describe these pictures or can be associations (feelings, emotions and so on).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(III) 4. Smart Reading. Creative Reading. Sensitive Reading.
You know that reading helps to expand vocabulary. After all, the language in books is often more sophisticated than that of our everyday conversations. More than that, reading improves the memory and concentration that’s essential for language learners to have.
But do you know what and how to read for this trick to work?
In some teaching sites I’ve found advice about use of reading Memoirs, Autobiographies and Poems.
When reading fiction, we get into the plot and don’t pay attention to the rich verbal expression of a writer.
In the SB of the 9th form we have ex.69 – adapted story by James Aldridge “The last Inch”.
The story has great pedagogical value. After doing pre-while- and after-reading exercises I wanted students to remember this story and also to develop their speaking skills. I wanted them to be smart story-tellers. I decided to use their emotional sphere and they got the task to choose the most breath-taking part of the story and make illustration for the book. As if they worked in a book-publishing company.
Students presented their works and told the part of the story which their picture was devoted to.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(IV) 5. Film, Film, Film.
Sometimes I don’t know how to organize the lesson if it seems to me rather boring. For example if we should speak about philosophical questions. In this case I use films or songs.
10th form, Biboletova M.Z.
Unit 2. Talking on family Matters.
Topic: What am I like? Identity.
On this lesson I used method “Silent Way”. It is based on problem-solving. Actually, for many people it’s a problem to understand WHO I AM? Why I Am?
(V).
Do you like this picture?
Why?
What is shown here?
What is it used for?
Who uses it?
(VI).
What is personality?
• Explain
• Find the synonyms
Is it important for a teenager or any person to understand the identity.
Lets watch the film.
--------------------
(making word-web)
Students should make individual word-web “My Identity” or “My Personality” or “Who am I?”
The word list should be big, categorized under different headings.
In Conclusion
Moving passive vocabulary into your active vocabulary is a natural process that all people experience throughout life, and it’s within your power to influence it.
