English is the most widespread global means of communication in the fields of politics, business, education, industry, mass media, intercultural interaction, as well as one of the main disciplines of educational programs. The growing generation is faced with English words on a daily basis, many terms are firmly embedded in everyday speech and are actively used, which makes school language learning more practice-oriented, closer to life and requires constant expansion of technological teaching techniques in order to increase the fun and productivity of learning.

To know a language means to master its structure and words. Thus, vocabulary is one of the aspects of the language to be taught in schools. The problem is what words and idioms pupils should retain. It is evident that the number of words should be limited because pupils have only 3 hours a week; the size of the group is not small enough to provide each pupil with practice in speaking. In my school where I work average amount of students in class is about 20; schools are not yet equipped with special laboratories for individual language learning. I my school children have desks, smart board and notebooks. The number of words pupils should acquire in school depends wholly on the syllabus requirements.

I have been working in a state secondary school №5 in Uglegorsk in Sakhalin for more than 25 years. On my lessons I always wanted to see students speaking English fluently. But not every student can express his thoughts freely. They were many children who can’t communicate fast with each other. That’s why I decided to set a goal – to help students to memorize new words.

I had been working with different kinds of English books during my teaching experience. There were English students books by T. Klement’eva, V.P. Kuzovlev and V.Evans. Whatever English book was, I looked for ways of teaching new words.  Because if you know words you can make up  different sentences and communicate with unknown people.

English methodologist  Andrew Wokly  said : “Without grammar you can say little, without vocabulary you can say nothing”.

Words are the most important things you can learn. Learning vocabulary is a very important part of learning English.  Grammar is important, but vocabulary is much more important. If you make a grammar mistake, it may be ‘wrong’ but very often people will understand you anyway. But if yoy don’t know the exact word that you need, it is very frustrating gor you, and the person you are talking to. Good English means having a big vocabulary.

 There are a number of basic vocabulary replenishment techniques applicable to learning any language, including native: reading books (as well as its modern version — listening to audiobooks), solving and composing crosswords, synonymous presentation of text materials, as well as word exchange occurring in the process communication.

 

There are better and worse ways to build your vocabulary quickly and effectively. For example “Find the Right Word”, “Word Partnership”, “Word Families” and many other. But I want to tell you about way “Words in sentences”.

When you find a new word that you want to put in a vocabulary list, it is a good idea to write a sentence using the word. This will help you understand and remember the word.

I have analyzed English Student Book by V.Evans for 5 year students. Text book consists of modules. But there are not many vocabulary exercises in every  module. I offer teachers to use these materials  in order to help students to revise and memorize new words.

I would like to suggest teachers some ways how to enrich students’s vocabulary. In a text book there is a word list. At first pupils earn new words (they listen to words’ pronunciation, repeat words and after that they try to memorize these words in sentences).

Let’s start from 5^th form. 

Starter module –

Look at page 12 – 13. Create and write own sentences. Here are samples of sentences.
