OBJECTIVES • Students will be able to identify different movie genres. • Students will be able to describe a movie using new vocabulary. • Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of vocabulary and characteristics of different movie genres.

American Movie Culture • Americans love going to the movies! • American movie studios make hundreds of movies every year. • There are many different kinds of movies that interest different people. • Although movies are different from each other, they are made up of the same basic parts.

Movie Vocabulary To hear the pronunciation, point your mouse over the words in bold. The kind of movie is called the genre. The period of time is where it takes place, like the past, present, or future. The setting of the movie is the background. This could be a specific place, like a city, a school, or a another planet. The actors are the people who are in the movie. The plot is what the movie is about. In a movie, the actors play characters.

Movie Vocabulary FOR EXAMPLE: THE SHAWSHANK The genre is a drama. REDEMPTION The setting of the movie is Shawshank Prison. The actors are Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. The plot is about a man who was wrongly convicted of murder and ordered to serve 2 life sentences. He never gives up hope to escape. It takes place in 1947. Tim Robbins plays Andy, the man who was wrongly convicted. Morgan Freeman plays a prisoner who becomes friends with Andy while at Shawshank Prison.

Movie Vocabulary There are many different movie genres. Below is a list with some of their basic features. Act it out! Now it’s your turn to be in a movie! 1. Get into groups of 4 2. Each group will choose a well-known movie. 3. Decide on a scene that best represents the movie, the plot, and the genre. 4. One person in the group will narrate the setting and when the movie takes place. The others will be the actors and will act out the scene. 5. The other teams have to guess the movie AND the genre, and the actors, if they know them. 6. Be imaginative!
