Dear Tanya,

I am writing you to tell you about our stay in Washington DC. You have asked me to write about us capital. So I am doing it in this letter. We really love the city. It is so green and so clean. It is situated on Potomac river, on a piece of land called the District of Columbia, which is why people call the US capital Washington, D.C. it is not the biggest city in the United States, but it is the most important.

The buildings are not very tall, the streets and avenues are straight, green and beautiful. The longest and the biggest avenues are named after American states. We have already done the centre of the city. We have been to White House and seen The Capitol. The Capitol is really great. This is where the United States Congress meets and makes laws.

The building of the White House is very beautiful with tall columns and the flag on the roof. It is the US president’s residence. This is where the president lives and works. It is one of the most famous buildings in the world. Its name comes from the fact that it is a white house. Tourists can’t see the part where the president lives, but they can see the Red Room, the Blue Room and the Green Room and some other rooms. By the way, the city is famous for its museums. I have been to the Natural History Museum but I haven’t seen the others yet.

Love,

Kate

New York

New York is the largest city in the USA and the biggest seaport. It is the business centre of the United States. New York is situated in the mouth of the Hudson river. In comparison with such ancient historical cities as, say, Rome, London, Moscow or Paris, New York is quite young. It was founded in 1613 by Dutch settlers.

There are five districts in the city: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Richmond. Manhattan is the central and the oldest part of the city.

It is the district of business and finance. It is here in Wall Street that many business offices, banks and the world famous New York stock exchange are situated. The New York stock exchange dominates business life of many countries.

The total area of New York is 365 square miles or 900 square kilometres. Its population together with the population of its suburbs amounts to 16 million people. Among the inhabitants of New York one can meet people of almost all nationalities.

They settled here during the immigration in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century.

A traveller who visits New York for the first time wonders at the modern architecture. The Statue of Liberty, which is on Liberty Island, was a present from France in 1876 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of American independence.

This statue and a few 18th and 19th century churches, hospitals, newspaper offices and other buildings are the only examples of "old" architecture in New York. Wherever your eyes travel, everywhere you can see sky-scrapers.

New York, one of the USA leading manufacturing cities, is the home of great firms and banks. The most important branches of industry are those producing vehicles, glass, chemicals and all kinds of machinery. The city has very busy traffic.

Many of them are on constant display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of Art. Most of the theatres and cinemas are in or near Broadway, the longest street and the biggest shopping district in New York. The Metropolitan and Modern Arts Museums attract many visitors.

4. Чтение, перевод и заполнение пропусков. Сначала преподаватель со студентами разбирает слова, которые нужно вставить в текст. Затем студенты вслух по очереди читают от одного до нескольких предложений и вставляют пропущенные слова.

San Francisco is the 12th most populous city in the United States. It lies on the Pacific coast on the western part of the United States. Sitting on 43 hills, and surrounded on three sides by water, San Francisco is ideally located so that almost every one of its streets ends or begins with a panoramic water view. Such location also provides very nice climate with warm summers and mild winters. San Francisco is also well known for its sunny beaches, where tourists can rest from city’s buzz . If sunbathing is not how you prefer to spend your time, SF boasts a very busy cultural life. The de Young Museum's former Asian collection is now permanently housed in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, located in the Civic Center. Across from the de Young Museum stands the California Academy of Sciences, which holds a huge array of science exhibits, including an aquarium and a natural history museum. Probably the most famous sight of San Francisco is The Golden Gate Bridge – it is one of the most well-recognizable bridges in the world! Of course, there are many, many more places to visit! The city is divided into 3 big parts: “Little Italy”, Chinatown and Japantown, so everybody can find something to their liking!

5. Карточки для составления диалогов. Студенты делятся на 3 группы, каждая вытягивает карточку, на которой написано несколько словосочетаний. Задача группы – составить диалоги, используя словосочетания с карточки.
