The English city of Coventry since ancient times is famous for a fine legend. It tells about wonderful history of lady Godiva. There was everything allegedly in the middle of the eleventh century. In those days Edward the Confessor famous for the inability to conduct economy ruled England. As in the country the shortage of money was felt, the king could not think up anything the best how to raise taxes.
The titled persons had the right to raise them. In Coventry it was the count Mercian Leofrik, the possessor of the city and lady Godiva's husband. The legend also says that citizens long asked the syuzeren not to make them by beggars, but he was firm as flint. Eventually, the kind and pious spouse of the count began to beg in every possible way him too to regret citizens. After the next request the husband of lady Godiva told it in a fit of temper that it for him is as impossible as to it to pass on a horse naked on city streets and that if the spouse decides on such act then it will cancel cruel taxes.
Unexpectedly for the husband the woman agreed. She as the legend says, sat down bared on a favourite horse and passed on city streets, and its inhabitants allegedly stayed at home and were not shown outside. Only one of them, "the spying Tom", tried to look in a chink at this miracle, but right there went blind. After that the count Leofrik connected by the feudal word of honor had to lower taxes.
In 1678 residents founded the annual festival in honor of lady Godiva which remained to this day. This holiday represents a carnival where there is a lot of music, songs, and in the evening fireworks. Participants of a carnival put on in suits of the 11th century. The procession begins from ruins of the first cathedral and further goes along the route laid to once brave lady. A final part of a festival passes in the city park at lady Godiva's monument.
