Unit    Liquid bodies

School:

Teacher:

Date:

Grade 10

Lesson Topic

Properties of the liquid surface layer. Wetting, capillary phenomena

Learning objective

10.2.4.2 – to explain  the liquid surface tension and the role of the  capillary phenomena in daily life;

Lesson Objectives:

Students will be able to

                    Define the surface tension;

                    describe the process of capillary

distinguish between wetting and non-wetting fluid

                    explain the capillary effect and

                    give examples from everyday life

Assessment Criteria

Learners achieve the learning objectives if  they correctly define the surface tension; able to distinguish between wetting and non-wetting fluid, correctly explain the capillary effect and give examples from everyday life, describe the process of capillary

Language objectives

Language learning objective: Learners can confidently express their views about process of capillary and surface tension

Subject-specific vocabulary & terminology: surface tension, the process of capillary, wetting, energy, force.

Useful set(s) of phrases for dialogue/writing:

Surface tension results from the direction of the…...

The smaller the dimensions of a system are, the more……

Water is trying to form the shape with the smallest…………

Wetting is the ability of a liquid to maintain contact with………, resulting from intermolecular interactions when…….

Surface tension is generally expressed in…….(SI unit).

Studying new content

10 minutes

 (I) Open book assessment

Students read the course book (pages 280-282)

Students can read surface tension and capillarity from Coursebook (p.280-282)

(G) The students discuss in pairs, explain to each other.

10 minutes

(W) The teacher show the PowerPoint presentation and explains the surface tension, wetting, explain the capillary effect and give examples from everyday life.

Discussion Questions: Ask the students and discuss as a class:

1. How do water bugs walk on the surface of the water?

2.  Why do soap bubbles form spheres instead of cubes?

3. What happens when a soap bubble pops?

4. Why does a stream of water form droplets as it falls?

Reflection on the taught lesson

1) Have all students attained the LO? If not, why?

2) How did the differentiation contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the lesson?

3) Have the time allotment in every part of the lesson been followed?

4) What were the deviations from the lesson plan and why?

5) What could help improve the lesson (think of both teaching and learning)?
