2.Warmup.
Group work
T: The English Lexicographer Dr. Samuel Johnson said: “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”. What
do you think about the quotation? Describe London expressing your point of view about this city.
Group1: In our opinion, London is very busy because the population is about 7 million people. It seems to us that
the streets are always busy in this capital. We think that the city is unique. London is two thousand years old. It was
founded in the first century A.D. by the Romans. The name of the town was Londinium. The Romans built
Londinium near the river Thames. The buildings of London can tell us interesting stories about history and culture.
Group2: We agree that London is a cultural centre but it is also one of the most important industrial centres. Lots of
things, such as clothes, food, planes and cars are made in and around London. London is a mixture of old and new
beautiful buildings. It seems to us that the life is very interesting in London because there are a lot of places of
interest: museums, theatres, cathedrals, picture galleries, palaces. (etc)
3.Checking up homework.
T: Divide into groups again. Your homework was to read two texts about the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland. Listen to the questions and answer. 1.Group 1: Stonehenge is situated in Scotland. The stones of Stonehenge are very big. Some stones weigh about
fortyfive tones – that’s heavier than eight elephants. Nobody knows how the stones were carried there. Many
people believe that it was a giant calendar or a temple.
2.Group2: The Globe theatre was opened in London in 1997. The original theatre burnt down over four hundred
years ago. It is an open air wooden theatre, where the audience stand around the stage. It is a famous theatre where
only the Shakespeare’s plays are staged.
3.Group 1: The symbol of England is a red rose. English people like gardening very much.
4.Group2: The thistle is one of the symbols in Scotland. These plants are very sharp. An ancient story says that
enemies hurt their feet on the Scottish thistles. They quickly jumped back into their ships and sailed away.
5.Group 1: A red dragon is the oldest symbol of Wales. If you go to Wales, you will see red dragons everywhere –
on the signs, in different souvenir shops. The leek and daffodil are also the symbols of Wales.
6.Group2: The shamrock is the most famous symbol of Northern Ireland. It became a symbol because it grows in
many places. The number three is very special for Irish people – some even believe it is magic.
7.Group 1: Madame Tussauds is one of the most famous museums. It has got wax models of popular people.
8.Group2: Trafalgar Square is named in commemoration of the victory that the British Navy under the command of
Admiral Nelson won over the French in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
9.Group 1: There are four bronze lions at the base of this column. There are also several lovely fountains.
10.Group2: It is Big Ben. In 1857 Parliament had a special sitting to decide how to call the bell. The members of
Parliament decided to name the bell after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was in charge of the building. Sir Benjamin was a
very tall man and people called him Big Ben.
11.Group 1: Buckingham Palace is the residence of the Queen of the United Kingdom. The changing of the guards
is a wonderful ceremony in front of this palace. When the flag is on the top, the Queen is in the palace.
12.Group 2: Westminster Abbey is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. It is more than nine
hundred years old. It is a symbol of England. The coronation of all the British Kings and Queens takes place here. There are also tombs of many great writers and scientists.
13. Group 1: The Tower of London was founded by the king William the Conqueror in 1078. It was a Royal
residence and fortress , then it became a prison. The Tower is a historical museum and the Armoury.
14.Group 2: The symbol of the Tower is a crow. People believe that if these birds fly away, the Tower will fall
down.
15.Group1: The British Museum consists of the National Library and Museum of History, Archaeology, Art and
Ethnography.
16.Group 2: St. Paul’s Cathedral is the greatest work of Sir Christopher Wren. It was built by Sir Christopher Wren
between 1675 and 1710 to replace the old Cathedral that was largely destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. It is a
place for many state ceremonies. Every year a special service is held on the occasion of the Monarch’s birthday.

Reading\ Speaking
T: You’ll work in groups. Read different texts, find some new interesting information and tell other groups about t Listening.
T: Listen to the text “ A sad story” and find a correct answer in the test “ True or False”.
A sad story
Three men came to New York for a holiday. They came to a very large hotel and took a room there. Their room was
on the fortyfifth floor. In the evening the young men went to the cinema. When the film was over, they went to a
restaurant and had supper there. They came back to the hotel very late.
“ I am very sorry”, said the clerk of the hotel, “but our lifts do not work at night. If you don’t want to walk up in
your room, you can sleep in the hall”.
“ No, no”, said one of the three men, “ no, thank you. We shall walk to our room”. Then he said to his friends, “ I
think I know how to make it easy for us to walk up to the fortyfifth floor. On our way to the room I’ll tell you some
jokes, then you, Peter, will tell us some interesting stories”.
So they began to walk up to their room. At last they came to the thirtyfourth floor. They were very tired by that
time, and they decided to have a rest. “Well”, said Tom, “ now it is your turn, Peter. Tell us a story with a sad end”.
“I’ll tell you a story”, said Peter.” It will not be long, but it will be sad enough. We have left the keys to our room in
the hall downstairs”.
