REVERSE GRAFFITI
Art has been around longer than human civilization, and possibly almost as
long as humans. But it’s a pretty safe bet that our ancient caveartist ancestors
couldn’t have imagined some of the strange forms modern art has taken.
Armed with rags, brushes a number of street artists across the globe have
begun expressing themselves through reverse graffiti, an art form that removes dust,
rust and dirt from urban surfaces to create images, tags and advertising slogans.
While many see the work as positive and imaginative, some view reverse graffiti in
the same negative light as traditional graffiti.
I certainly approve of the “clean” urban art.
This latest trend in street art is sweeping across the globe and allowing artists
to let their creativity run wild without breaking any laws, all because they are
cleaning rather than reaching for the spray can. By using pressure washers, metal
brushes and sandpaper, street artists are able to create these amazing "reverse graffiti"
artworks leaving the imagery behind in the negative space.
Reverse graffiti, also known as "clean tagging", "dust tagging", "grime
writing", "clean graffiti", "green graffiti" or "clean advertising", is a method of
creating temporary or semipermanent images on walls or other surfaces by removing
dirt from a surface. It can also be done by removing dirt or dust with the fingertip
from windows or other dirty surfaces, such as writing "wash me" on a dirty car.
Others use a cloth or a highpower washer to remove dirt on a larger scale. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT REVERSE GRAFFITI OR
CLEAN ADVERTISING
WHAT IS REVERSE GRAFFITI?
Reverse Graffiti is the process of cleaning specific areas of dirty pavements or
walls which creates art or advertising through the contrast of clean and dirty sections.
A simple example of Reverse Graffiti is using a wet finger to write “Clean Me” on
the back of a dirty van. For repeatable and commercial reverse graffiti, typically, a
stencil is produced in metal or plastic to create the design. The stencil is then placed
on to the dirty surface and then either a power washer or clean cloth is then used to
clean through the cut out areas of the stencil. When the stencil is lifted the stencil
design is replicated on the dirty pavement or wall with clean areas.
THE HISTORY OF REVERSE GRAFFITI
Also known as “clean tagging,” the movement originated with English
artist Paul “Moose” Curtis, who was inspired by the dirty walls of a restaurant where
he washed dishes as a teenager. Moose is the pseudonym of Paul Curtis,
a British graffiti artist. Instead of the typical methods of graffiti, Moose creates his art
by cleaning dirt and grime off surfaces.
In his forties, the ‘clean artist’ began tracing patterns and slogans onto dirtied
surfaces in 1999 and has begun a ‘reversegraffiti’ movement.
Another British artist is Ben Long, who practices a slightly lowertech version
of reverse graffiti than Curtis. Long creates temporary images on the back of trailers
by using his finger to remove the grime from the trucks’ exhaust. His drawings can
last a surprisingly long time—up to six months if they are not removed by rain,
vandals, or truck drivers—allowing them to reach a potentially huge audience of
motorists. Banksy is an anonymous Englandbased street artist, vandal, political activist,
and film director. His works of political and social commentary have been featured
on streets, walls, and bridges of cities all over the world.
HOW TO USE REVERSE GRAFFITI
Reverse graffiti is now used by brands and businesses to bring attention to their
products and services as an alternative to traditional outdoor advertising such as
billboards and poster sites. Reverse Graffiti Adverts can be placed almost anywhere
with a dirty pavement to deliver a branded message or call to action.
WHICH BRANDS HAVE WORKED WITH REVERSE GRAFFITI?
Hundreds of brands have used reverse graffiti in their brand campaigns. Here is
a list of brands who worked with Street Advertising Services to create their
campaigns:
Nike, Puma, Yahoo, Kia Cars, The Times, 20th Century Fox, BMW, Royal
Opera House, Sony, Pizza Hut, The Hard Rock Cafe, Samsung, Reebok and the list
goes on and on!
IS REVERSE GRAFFITI LEGAL?
When is cleaning walls a crime? When you’re doing it to create art ! A number
of street artists around the world have started expressing themselves through a
practice known as reverse graffiti. Inspired by the ‘clean me’ messages that you see
written on the back of some trucks, they find dirty surfaces and inscribe them with
images or messages using cleaning brushes or pressure hoses. Either way, it’s the
same principle: the image is made by cleaning away the dirt.
Each artist has their own individual style but all artists share a common aim: to
draw attention to the pollution in our cities. The antipollution message of the reverse graffiti artists confuses city
authorities since the main argument against graffiti is that it spoils the appearance of
both types of property: public and private.
This was what Leeds City Council said about Moose’s work: ‘Leeds residents
want to live in clean and attractive neighbourhoods. We view this kind of advertising
as environmental damage and will take strong action against any advertisers carrying
out such campaigns.’ It seems that no action was taken against the advertisers – no
fines nor any other punishment – but Moose himself was ordered to ‘clean up his
act’. How was he supposed to do this: by making all property he had cleaned dirty
again?
For me, reverse graffiti is completely legal due to the fact no chemicals, inks or
paints are being used. For others, they perceive it as an act of vandalism. This won’t
change for some time but until we hear otherwise, the pavements are awash with
“clean ads”.
VERDICT
Graffiti has some pretty bad stigmas attached to it and is seen as an act of
vandalism by many. Graffiti usually involves defacing a clean surface. But for a
growing number of street artists, a dirty wall is a blank canvas just waiting to be
washed. Instead of tagging city walls with spray paint, these artists are power
washing dirt, grime and dust from outdoor surfaces, while using stencils to create
stunning works of art. The trend has gained popularity in recent years, and I can say
for sure that this is the only time you’ll want to see graffiti all over your
neighborhood.
