A ROUND UP LESSON
THEME ‘PROTECTION OF
ENVIRONMENT’
NAME ‘THE LAND OF
PLENTY?’ Equipment: Students’ books, a
screen, a computer, a tape
recorder, a notebook, posters:
1. The protection of nature
means the protection of our
Motherland. 2. Nature is the source of
people’s life.
3. Environmental protection
concerns everyone.
4. ‘If you don’t think about
the future you will not have it.’ (John Galsworthythe great
English writer)
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
to practise and develop
reading and speaking skills; to practise active vocabulary
and grammar on the topic
‘Protection of Environment’;
to develop communicative and
interactive skills in pairs and
groups;
to develop creative skills while working on projects;
to develop computer skills;
LESSON ITINERARY 1. Introducing the subject and
setting the lesson objectives.
Teacher: Good morning, dear
students, colleagues and guests.
Today we are going to have a
roundup lesson on the theme
‘Protection of environment’. The name of our lesson is ‘The
Land of Plenty?’
We’ll discuss many important
problems connected with our
topic. You’ll exchange your
opinions about the global problem
how to protect our Earth, how to prevent further pollution of the
atmosphere, what urgent and
necessary measures to undertake.
Be active, energetic, creative in
your work. Good luck.
2. Warming up
Teacher Today you will work in
pairs and two teams in order to prove the sayings: ‘Two heads are
better than one.’ ‘The voice of one
man is the voice of no one.’
Dear friends! You’ve read a lot of
stories, you’ve done a lot of
exercises on our theme. Let’s
refresh our mind.
1. How do you understand the name of our lesson ‘ The Land
of Plenty?’
Pupil 1: It is a place where there is
an abundant supply of everything.
Here, it refers to the idea that we
tend to treat the Earth as if its
resources were inexhaustible,
while in fact there might not always be plenty of everything if
we continue to abuse the
environment.
2. How can we stop people from
littering our towns and
countryside?
Pupil 2: Fine people on the spot
for dropping rubbish, have more bins and have them emptied more
regularly.
3. How can we encourage people
to recycle?
Pupil 3: Charge people for plastic
bags in supermarkets or don’t
provide them, have a competition
to make something out of recycled products, make the price of
recycled paper etc. cheaper than
nonrecycled.
4. How can we deal with the
problem of air pollution from
cars and factories?
Pupil 4: Get people to boycott
companies that pollute the environment, encourage car
manufactures to design more
environmentally friendly ( for
example, solarpowered cars,
improve public transport, create
more bicycle lanes. Our president
Khamitov promised to create a lot
of bicycle lanes in Ufa in the nearest future.
III.Phonetic exercises.
Teacher: ‘ Hug the Earth’ is
a remarkable poem by Lorraine
Bayers. Let’s read it altogether.
Walking along feeling free
Feeling the earth here with me And I love her, she loves me.
I hug the Earth, the Earth hugs
me.
She’s our friend,
We can call our home.
Food is a treasure from the soil
and the sea. Clean, fresh air from the plants
and the trees.
The warmth of the sun giving
life each day
We’d like to be together forever.
The earth is a garden.
It’s a beautiful place. For all living creatures,
For all the human race.
Helping Mother Earth
We can peacefully roam. We all
deserve a place
Turns water into rain, it’s
nature’s way. And I would like to thank you,
Mother Earth,
I like to see you dressed in green
and blue
I want to be by you.
Teacher: The poet Lorraine Bayes
found the right words that touch our souls. I think that you like the
poem ‘Hug the Earth’.
Let’s remember some lexis
concerning our theme. Will you
read the transcription of words one
by one, then pronounce the words
altogether. Will you begin, please.
Try to pronounce them correctly. ɪ

than half of the world’s plant and animal species live in tropical
rainforests.
10. _________ companies are
cutting down some of the most
endangered forests on the planet
just to make wood and paper
products.
V. Dramatization Teacher: Well done. Last lesson
we began to dramatize an episode
from our life ‘ Having a rest in the
forest’.
P1. Who are you? What are you
doing here?
P2. I’m on my way home from
school. It’s one of the last days of the term. The weather is so nice
that I decided to take a longer way
home and have a picnic in the
grove.
P3: You left all your rubbish on
the ground. There are bits of glass
from your bottles of juice.
P1: Flowers have been pulled out. Animals are frightened. Trees are
splashed with paint. The fire is
burning. The air is polluted.
P2: The forest is big. There are
lots of places for others to have a
rest. I’m going to relax and have a
good time. It’s so noisy and dirty
in the city. Teacher: Let’s discuss the
situation. What are your opinions?
Do you agree or disagree with the
boy?
P4: The boy wants to relax after a
hard working day. But it is
impossible to do it in a noisy city, so he decided to camp in the
forest.
P5: But he left the camp fire
burning near a heap of dry leaves,
this often causes a forest fire.
Have you ever seen a forest
destroyed by fire?
P6: That’s an awful thing to see. Campers must always remember to
put out their camp fire and cover
the place with earth. It’s the duty
of every camper to take the
greatest care not to start a forest
fire.
P7: I fully agree with you. The forests are in danger. A lot of
forests have burnt in Russia and in
Bashkortostan , too. But they are
disappearing fast not only
because of fires. Every day we use
paper and cardboard made from
wood. We use different kinds of
wood to make furniture and other things. Every year huge forests are
cleared for different uses, and a lot
of forests are so badly damaged
that they will hardly be able to
recover.
P8: By the way, some medicines
come from trees, plants and
flowers which grow in the forest. P9: Besides the huge forests help
to control the world’s weather, and
to produce much of the oxygen in
the air. We produce carbon dioxide
when we burn things.
P10: The problem of the
environment is widely covered by
TV, radio and the press. There are People who are trying to do
something about it. They are
environmentally green and
members of ‘The Greenpeace’ or
‘The friends of the Earth’
organizations.
P11: I agree with you. Nowadays
people understand how important it is to solve environment
problems. One of them is pollution
in its many forms: water pollution,
air pollution, nuclear pollution.
There is no ocean or sea which is
not used as a dump. They are used
for dumping industrial and nuclear waste. This poisons and kills fish
and sea animals.
P12: I’d like to add that many
rivers and lakes are poisoned too.
Factories and plants produce a lot
of waste and pour it into rivers.
P13: The other environmental problems are: Noise from cars,
buses, planes; Destruction of
wildlife ( disappearance of many
species of animals) and
countryside beauty; Shortage of
natural resources ( metals, different kinds of fuel); The
growth of the population;
Deforestation.
Teacher:Sure. Let’s talk about
them in detail.
V. Running a discussion
P14: Don’t litter. Where many
people live together, litter may become a problem. Some people
find it easier to drop a paper, a
wrapper or a cigarette, than to look
for garbage can for it. Litter on the
ground or in the street makes the
city look ugly. Litter on the beach
spoils the view. The wind blows
scraps of paper far away. Empty bottles and cans go under one’s
feet. Litter is not really dangerous
but it is annoying.
As for garbage, it may become a
health problem. Rooting food on
the ground smells bad. It attracts flies, insects and birds, which may
carry disease. Around big garbage
heaps rats live. More and more
people don’t want to put up with
litter and garbage in their cities.
In many cities and towns littering
is against the law. One may be fined for littering. ‘Don’t litter’
and ‘ Keep your country tidy’ are
famous sayings all over the world
nowadays. One may read these
words on many wrappers and
packing boxes.
P15: Well I guess to each person
being green means something different – for some it is recycling,
for others it is a complete change
in their way of life. Doing a small
bit to making the planet a better
place to live with something like
recycling of paper, card, plastic
and glass is becoming more and
more part of everyone’s daily life and it is a good thing. Whatever
we can do to help with saving the
planet’s resources whether it be a
small gesture like this or using
alternative energy sources like
wind power, solar energy or
biofuels or a much grander gesture
like living in a completely eco friendly environment ( like self
sustaining communities that are
popping up everywhere) with a
totally green way of life.
If you don’t know where or what
to start with then start low scale by
trying recycling which can be
easily stored in separate boxes or bins( i.e. one for glass, one for
paper, one for plastic etc) and for
some of you these are provided by
your local council who will also
collect these items for you on a
weekly or fortnightly basis. You
can also take your items to a
recycling centre near to you. And, if everyone does a little bit all adds
to a very large bit which can make
an impact on the world we live in.
P2: You are right. I can’t leave
this rubbish here. Thank you for
helping me understand that the
country is a beautiful place and
that I must not spoil it. Teacher: I’m very glad that you
understand everything. I’m sure
you are a real friend of our fragile
planet. Let’s continue our
discussion. What do think about
using private transport in cities?
Not long ago we wrote an essay on
this topic. P16: The number of private
transport such as cars and
motocycles on our roads is
constantly increasing and causing
Serious environmental problems.
I think, banning all private
transport in cities could be a good
idea, as it would reduce pollution levels and it will improve our
quality of life.
To begin with cars and
motorcycles release into the air
harmful gases. Fewer cars and
motorcycles would vastly improve
air quality. We breathe in polluted
air and lung disease appears. To get to work, you can go on foot
or ride a bike. You are going to get
to work without traffic and at the
same time you would train your
body.On the other hand, many
people will argue for against the
complete ban of private transport
because it will be impossible to reach long destinations.
Therefore,transport shouldn’t
disappear, but we must reduce its
amount. Lorries should be banned
from the centres of cities and
towns at certain times. They
should use cleaner fuels. All in all,
I feel that a ban of private transport could be an effective way to
improve the environment. People
and animals would be benefit.
P17: I agree with you but I want to
add that we should use the rule
‘ one car for one family’ and a
total ban on private transport
restricts people’s rights and freedom.
Also the local councils must
create special green pedestrian
areas with parks and forests
without roads for cars.
Teacher: And what about your
family? Do you follow the rule
‘ one car for one family’? As for me, I prefer trams and trolleybuses
instead of buses because of fresh
air. But if I’m in a hurry I go by
bus or by car. As you know Ufa is
too polluted, it’s difficult to
breathe here. Certain measures
have to be taken in order to
improve the situation. What can you say about global
warming? Do factories, plants
pollute air in big cities?
P18: Over the past two decades,
the temperature of the Earth’s
Atmosphere has gradually
increased. Global warming is one
of the climatic effects of polluted air. It worries a lot of people.
Pollution from factories, plants and
cars poisons the air we breathe and
is the main reason for the
greenhouse effect and acid rain.
Teacher: What causes the
‘greenhouse effect’?
P19: The ‘ greenhouse effect’ is caused by carbon dioxide, which
prevents heat from escaping. It
works like this: sunlight gives us
heat. Some of the heat warms the
atmosphere, and some of the heat
goes back into space. As a result,
the air surrounding the earth has become much warmer because the
heat can’t go back into space. This
happens because of the increasing
amount of carbon dioxide. It is
produced when things are burned.
This gas lets heat in, but it doesn’t
let much heat out. So the
atmosphere becomes warmer. Teacher: Is acid rain damaging
to nature? What do you think
about it?
P20: Another source of global
warming is acid rain. Acid rain
appeared as a reaction of the
atmosphere to the contamination of the air. Acid rain damages
water, forest and soil resources.
Acid rain causes fish to disappear
from many lakes, which brings
death to the forests and woods in
Europe and America. There are
ways to reduce acid rain.
Firstly, power stations should stop releasing so much pollution
into the air. Secondly, car drivers
should use leadfree petrol.
Thirdly, we should use less
electricity, and finally, we should
try to use public transport instead
of cars.
Teacher: What do you know about the problem of nuclear
tests?
P22: People all over the world
protest against nuclear tests and
nuclear weapons. If we don’t take
any actions, the possibility of a
global nuclear disaster is very real.
Usually the ozone layer in the atmosphere protects us from
ultraviolet radiation but there are a
lot of holes in the ozone layer
these days. It can be the cause
of skin cancer.
Teacher: People suffer from many
diseases nowadays. And the plants
from the rainforests are used in modern medicine. But the
rainforests are in danger
nowadays. Why is it happening?
P22: The rainforests are
disappearing because of
deforestation. The rainforests are
home to many unique plants and
animals. But they are vanishing and need our help. The rainforests
are the lungs of the planet because
they take in carbon dioxide and
release oxygen. Logging
companies cut down the trees for
timber and farmers clear areas to
graze their cattle on. This not only
destroys the plants in the forest but also the homes of many
animals. The rainforests are a
beautiful and vital natural resource
that benefits all of mankind.
Rainforests accommodate animals
such as raccoons, giant
salamanders and mountain
beavers. We cannot allow them disappear any longer and must do
everything we can to save them.
Teacher: You are quite right. It’s
very important that you understand
the most serious environmental
problems. You have done a lot
work at home. I know that you
have prepared project works and today you used some extracts from
them at the discussion.

VI.Conclusion
Dear friends! You are future
engineers, scientists, teachers,
ecologists. You will continue addressing the environmental
problems which concern everyone.
You will work out new projects,
slogans. I hope you’ll be active
members of the movement for the
protection of the environment from
further pollution. What slogans
will you put forward to make people be more environment
conscious and more active in the
movement for the purity of the
ecology? Your homework was
to find or think of slogans. They
are on the screen. Let’s read them
orally.
SLOGANS: 1. Protect the environment from
industrial pollution.
2. Stop the danger of
environmental disaster.
3. Attract more public attention
to environmental problems.
4. Ensure nature conservation.
5. Nature is the source of people’s life.
6.International cooperation is
necessary to create a system of
ecological security.
7. Keep the land, air and water
clear.

Carry it out.
14. Help nature. Protect it.
15. The protection of nature means
the protection of our Motherland.
16. The Earth is our home. Don’t
pollute it. 17. Be a friend to fish. Don’t throw
rubbish into their homes.
18. When you hike, leave the place
clean.
19. Leave wild flowers for others
to enjoy.
20. Plant a tree to create homes
for birds, squirrels and other small animals.
21. Environmental protection
concerns everyone.
22. ‘If you don’t think about the
Earth you will not have it.’
John Galsworthy.
Thank you, friends. I’m
absolutely convinced that you are right. I invite everybody to sing
the song ‘Heal the World’ by
Michael Jackson, which sounds
as a call to the peoples of the
whole world to save the Earth.
Thanks to everybody. Our time is
up. You have got the excellent and
good marks. The lesson is over. Bye. ‘Heal the world’
There’s a place in
Your heart
And I know that it is love
And this place could
Be much
Brighter than tomorrow
And if you really try You’ll find there’s no need
To cry
In this place you’ll feel
There’s no hurt or sorrow
There are ways
To get there
If you care enough For the living
Make a little space
Make a better place…
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race There are people dying
If you care enough
For the living
Make a better place
For you and for me
If you want to know why
There’s a love that Cannot lie
Love is strong
It only cares for
Joyful giving
If we try
We shall see
In this bliss We cannot feel
Fear or dread
We stop existing and
Start living
Then it feels that always
Love’s enough for
Us growing So make a better world
Make a better world…
Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me
And the entire human race
There are people dying If you care enough
For the living
Make a better place
For you and for me
