Victory Day is the most sacred holiday in the Russian Federation. On this day we commemorate millions of people who were killed in battlefields, tortured in death camps, taken to forced labour to Germany. For the Russians this is a day both of sorrow and joy, the Day of Sorrow because our country lost millions of our citizens, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters. It is the biggest tragedy in the history of Russia. This is the Day of Joy because we enjoy our common Victory, we are happy that our country won this terrible and the deadliest war ever. Nothing can turn the killed and tortured back to us, it’s impossible and our mission is keeping memory of victims during that war. On this day we watch films of the war on TV, observe a military parade in Red square and give flowers to our veterans.
But actually just some young modern people know what we celebrate on May 9. The others say they celebrate the end of the WWII. It’s not true. On May 9 (according to Moscow time) there was the signing of the unconditional capitulation of Nazi Germany before the USSR on the eastern front and the allies(the UK, the USA and France) in the West. According to Central European time it took place on May 8 because a new day didn’t come yet, that’s why Europeans celebrate it on the day earlier than the Russians. So, on May 9 Nazi Germany stopped to resist and laid down arms. It was the end of the war in Europe, but it was not the end of the WWII. The war continued in the Far East, in the Pacific region. The USA army went on fighting against the Japanese Empire, the US army had many difficulties and US generals were not sure in quick ending the war. American and British command, its official name “The Combined Chiefs of Staff” considered the war in Asia would continue at least a year or longer and didn’t hope to win the war soon.
The US navy destroyed the Japanese navy at the sea and American forces got ready to landing on the Japanese islands, but it was true it could require about a million of killed in the American army. President Truman who became the president after Roosevelt’s death in April in 1945 needed help and he turned to Stalin(The Sovit leader at that moment) for help. The USSR agreed to support the USA and declared the war to Japan that was absolutely unready for the war on 2 fronts. Mainly this event led to the end of the war, not dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki as most of Americans think now. The Red Army crushed the Japanese Army in Northern China and Korea and the Japanese Emperor was forced to put down weapons. The WWII ended on the board of the US battleship “Missouri” on September 2 in 1945, starting in Poland on September 1 in 1939. But, of course, millions of the Russians associate the Great Victory not with the end of the war in Asia, but with the finish of the war in Europe. Honour and glory to our heroes!
