Studies of the atmosphere first received technical support in 1912. Equipment to measure temperature and pressure was invented in Germany. But the question was how to raise it high into the air. In 1921, Russian engineers suggested using planes. The special equipment was put on planes that made regular flights. Thanks to this, scientists got a lot of new information about the structure of the atmosphere. Nowadays scientists use modern flying laboratories to study the structure of clouds at different levels. Unlike the first planes, these laboratories can work in any weather and are able to predict climate changes.

1.        How much time do you usually watch TV every day?

I hardly ever watch television on weekdays because I usually do my homework, read or play tennis in the evenings. I only watch it for one or two hours on Sundays.

How about watching «Who wants to be a millionaire?» It is a game show (a talk show, a quiz, a music concert). It is shown once a week (once a month, every two weeks, on Sundays, at …am/ pm, early in the morning, late at night, in the afternoon).  The programme is now hosted by Dmitry Dibrov. You are going to give a talk about public holidays in Russia. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

o   what public holidays are celebrated in Russia;

o   what your favourite public holiday is, and why you like it;

o   how your favourite public holiday is celebrated in your city, town or village.

I’d like to give a talk about public holidays because this topic is part and parcel of our life.

 In my country there are a lot of public holidays. They are official holidays when people don’t have to go to work or to school because  banks, schools, and many businesses are closed for the day. The most popular public holidays are New Year Holiday, Country Defendant’s Day, Women’s Day, Victory Day and Russia Day.

My favourite public holiday is New Year Holiday or Novogodniye kanikuly. I like this holiday for many reasons. Firstly, I like decorating  the New Year tree with tinsel, baubles and fairy lights. Secondly, I am fond of buying and giving gifts to my relatives and to all my friends. Finally, I like this holiday very much because I always get lots of presents.

In my city, we celebrate New Year holiday from the 2nd  to the 8th of January. During these non-working days we invite our relatives and friends and we eat a big dinner together. Then, we play party games, sing songs, dance or go into the city to watch magnificent fireworks in the streets. The city is decorated with lanterns and it’s very busy. Everyone has fun and feels happy.

                 All in all, I think that public holidays are a part of our culture and we should try to keep up these traditions.

That’s all I can say about public holidays in Russia. Thank you for listening.
