Without the energy from the Sun, the Earth would have no life at all. Nowadays everyone knows that the Sun is a star. Like all stars, the Sun is a great burning ball of gases. To us, it seems large and red. The other stars look white or light blue because they are much farther from us than the Sun. In the past, many people believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe. They thought that the Sun and the stars went round it. Only in 1543, a great Polish scientist published a book in which he tried to prove a different point of view. According to him, the Earth and the other planets moved round the Sun. Those people who supported the scientist were often imprisoned and even killed.

When did you get your first mobile phone?

I got my first mobile phone when I was 8 years old.

(I was about 16 when I got my first mobile phone. Actually, I didn’t buy it. It was a gift from my parents when I finished my exams at school.)

What do you usually use your mobile for?

Mobile phones have now become an important part of our daily lives. Firstly, I use  my mobile phone for communication. For example, I can keep in touch with my parents. Secondly, mobile phones are an excellent way for teenagers to maintain friendships. For instance, I can phone my friends or send a text message to swap news or wish happy birthday.

(My phone is important because I use it for everything, calling, texting, keeping in touch with friends in other countries and many other things as well as playing games sometimes just to amuse myself. I would be lost without it.)

How do you feel when you forget your mobile phone at home?

I love my mobile phone, I don’t go anywhere without it. So, when I forget it at home I feel nervous.

Do you think it’s right that mobile phones are not allowed at some schools?

I think it’s right that mobile phones are not allowed at some schools because it helps students to focus on lessons.(I think the school should have a policy for mobile phones to avoid children being inattentive in the classroom. Students shouldn't be permitted to have their phones on when they are in lessons, but be allowed to use them between classes and in breaktime.)

In what places would you recommend people to switch off their phones? Why?

In my opinion, you should switch off your mobile phone at theatres, cinemas or concert halls as their ringing may prevent people from enjoying the performance or film.

 How can mobiles harm your health?

Some people claim that overuse of mobile phones could be dangerous for people’s health. In particular, they are worried that radiation from mobiles could cause cancer.

(To avoid possible health problems we should always remember how to use our mobile phones wisely. We should send fewer text messages or use different fingers when you text or we can get thumb arthritis. We should clean our mobile phones properly or we can get a skin infection, acne or a rash.)

You are going to give a talk about travelling. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

Remember to say:

o         why most people like travelling;

o         which season is the best for travelling in your opinion;

o         what means of transport is the best, and why.

I’d like to give a talk about travelling because this topic is part and parcel of our life.

Travelling is a popular pastime and people travel for different reasons. Firstly, some people want to see other countries and continents, meet unique people and take in the local traditions. Secondly, travelling is a good way to study geography and practise foreign languages. Moreover, by travelling you can experience adventure, enjoy your favourite sport and get away from your daily routine.

 Some people like snow, some people like rain, but I love the sun! That’s why my favourite season for travelling is summer.  I can spend most of my free time at the beach swimming, lying in the sun and playing different games. Besides, I like snorkelling because you can see so many fascinating kinds of fish underwater.

(Since I really can’t stand the heat, I like travelling in winter, when I can go to the mountains. My family and I often stay in a log cabin and go skiing on the slopes. We also like to go trekking on the nature trails and catch a glimpse of wildlife. If we have time we also go climbing.)

(In my opinion, spring is the best time for travelling, especially abroad. In March and early April European cities and towns are already full of flowers whereas in Russia we still have snow on the ground.)

(I think autumn is especially good for travelling because nature is full of bright colours. It’s a great time to visit and explore ancient Russian towns. Besides, autumn is a wonderful time for going to the country because there are a lot of mushrooms and berries in the forest.)

As for me, I like travelling and I travel quite a lot. I like all means of transport, but my favourite one is travelling by plane. I prefer to travel by plane because it is fast and comfortable. Besides, if you have a window seat, you can get a wonderful view of the beautiful cloudy sky.

I prefer to travel by car because I think it’s the most comfortable means of transport. You don’t have to buy tickets and carry heavy  luggage. You can stop wherever you wish and spend as much time as you like at any place.)
