Do you know where the Halloween celebration comes from?

History
Halloween traditions come from 16th century England, Scotland, and Ireland. About 2000 years ago Ancient Celts celebrated a festival. Its name was Samhain. It was on the night from the 31st of October to the 1st of November. The Celts celebrated the end of summer and the beginning of winter. It was also about death and new life. During this celebration, the Celts lit bonfires and people jumped over them. They called this day All Hallows' eve (Halloween).

Costumes
The Celts believed that evil ghosts and spirits came back on this day to harm people. That's why they dressed up in different costumes and put on masks. They thought that spirits couldn't see or hurt them.

Jack-o'-lantern
There is another symbol of Halloween. It's a jack-o'-lantern. People carved scary faces in pumpkins and put a candle in them. Then, they put the jack-o'-lantern on their windows to scare the ghosts and evil spirits away.

Trick or treat
Also, Celts left some food outside their houses for ghosts and spirits on Hallows' Eve. In Europe, rich people gave some food such as pies or cakes to poor people on All Souls' Day. American people kept this tradition, but now it's more modern, and we call it "trick or treat".

Modern celebration
Nowadays, Halloween is a very popular holiday (it's the 2nd after Christmas in popularity). Children love this holiday and go from house to house and say "Trick or treat!". People give children different sweets, biscuits or fruits. If somebody doesn't prepare any sweets for children, they could play some tricks on them or their houses.
