Aim: Teaching the meaningful reading with the extraction of meaningful information

Objectives: By the end of the lesson students will be able to: use the vocabulary in describing the characters; to find information in the text; to practice discussion skills; to work in groups; to establish the causal relationship between the facts and events set out in the text; to have information about the American author O. Henry.

Equipment: dictionaries, computer, the Internet, hand outs, flashcards, O. Henry’s books, disk with MP3 files.

Good morning. I’m glad to see you. Take your seats.

How are you? Do you like to read? What’s your favourite book? Who is your favourite writer? Do you like fantasy books? Do you prefer to read Russian or American authors? Do you like to read in English? Do you know American or British writers?

Do you know him? (slide1)  He’s an American writer of short stories.

How will you translate the name of his story «Witches’ loaves».(slide 2)

It will be the topic of our lesson today. What are your own aims on the topic?

We are going to read and listen one of the story of O. Henry and do different tasks according the text.

Now we are to listen to the biography of O. Henry. (1 student)

1.PRE-READING

Look at the photos; try to guess what will be the story «Witches’ loaves» about? (slide 3)

2.WHILE-READING

1) Read and listen the text. Find synonyms to the words and phrases (bd):                              a shop in which bread, cakes are sold  (a baker), a set of artificial teeth (false teeth) , a person who buys goods(customer) , dry (rainless), spots(stains) , a person who draws plans and sketches (draftsman)                                                                                              2) What adjectives are suitable for the Miss Martha and the customer? (bd)                  good-tempered, good-natured, bad-tempered, friendly, sensible, attentive, thoughtful , aggressive, kind-hearted, sympathetic, pleasant, rude.

3) Put the sentences in the right order. (group 1)

4) Answer the following questions. (Group 2)

5) Say whether the statement is true or false. Correct the false one. (group 3)

Let’s check up. Others groups are to correct or add the information.

 

3.POST-READING

1)What is the main idea of the story? Do not do good you will not get evil. There is no silver lining. (slide 4) (bd)

2) Do you like the story? Why?

3) What’s your opinion about the proverb? Discussion.

 

What about your aims? Have you obtained them? Choose dollars for your work. (slide 5)

Homework Read one story of O Henry, prepare short description of it.
